Default Plex to launch digital movie store in February 2024

Plex is launching a store for users to buy and rent movies in February, the company’s executives told Lowpass‘ Janko Roettgers at CES 2024.

Cord Cutters News later independently confirmed the news.

According to the report, “most studios” have “lined up for launch” and the service plans to launch a catalog soon after. The new store will also integrate with current Plex features like watchlists.

This of course has some worried about their backup dvd collection on plex getting removed.

If plex wants to be a vudu they need to sign up with movies anywhere. Otherwise they will end up down there with rowz.

Isn't Plex where people put movies on and anyone can watch them? Why would people bother to buy on there?

How many used their software to rent movies and make illegal copies to keep? Why would any studio sign up with them?

Plex is always looking for ways to make money.

Actually, looking for ways to "take" money. Making money is difficult these days to the point that simply taking money is easier and more profitable. Find someone to charge for stuff. Even if you are selling things that don't exist in real life. It's like a scam but it's legal and also very trendy.

Make a game and establish a virtual currency and then you can actually take people's money.

I"m glad I haven't used Plex in years. They kept adding things until basic functionality was lost.

The FAQ at Plex is funny....

Is Plex really free?

Plex is a free streaming app for everyone, no credit cards or subscription costs or hidden fees. To keep our service free we include ads which monetize all of the content that our partners, such as Lionsgate, AMC, and A24, provide to us.

What is Plex Pass? And can I use it to watch Plex ad-free?

Plex Pass is our premium subscription option designed for our users looking to get the most out of their own personal media via their Plex Media Server. We do not currently offer any option for watching Plex-provided content without ads. A Plex Pass does not remove ads, nor does it provide access to extra content on our free services. Check out an overview on Plex Pass benefits here.

Unless you can download the movie and play without a internet connection you are not buying anything at all.

And like Hulu the Plex streaming pq is crap.

Those 2 paragraphs really speak to the split identity of Plex. There's really two distinct camps the people who care about Plex as a media server software and the people who care about Plex as a service. Nether side really cares about the other it seems. The first paragraph is trying to appeal to the 2nd group who treat the app like Pluto or Tubi where the second paragraph is more oriented to the 1st group building their own library. The juxtaposition with that context removed is pretty funny, and now that you mention it it is pretty wild that shelling out $100+ on their lifetime plan gets you no real benefit from their content arm at all.
