Yes they are. In my experience, they load the discs faster, handle tone-mapping better, support Dolby Vision (I don't think the Xbox does), can actually bitstream audio (my Xbox One S could not)... The only time where I'd want a console is if I needed an all-in-one device that had apps and also supported discs.

I think i someone does not want extra equipment.... a console will make a good player. But personally I prefer using a stand alone player for movies. It is all designed for you to watch a film, it is that simple.

Honestly, it really depends on what you need. I love my 4K Blu-ray player because it gives me the best picture and sound when I'm watching movies

PS3 was the best blu ray player available when it launched.

I know because the only other ones were over $1000 and were all buggy except for the Sony one.

PS5 makes a great disc player (provided you have the console with the disc drive obviously) ... However, it's harder to setup and use than the stand alone players. And, you may get PS related notifications during playback depending again on how it's setup.

(I have never had an XBox so I can't comment on those.)

In my theater I always use a stand alone player. The PS5 is hooked up to a TV upstairs in the game room.

My main complaint about the Xbox One S is that it takes a couple minutes for mine to start up vs turning on my LG UBK90, loading the disc and pressing 'play.'

I dont think PS5 supports Dolby Vision, which should be a complete deal breaker for anyone who cares about maximizing their home theater experience.

Indeed they were. I remember reading that Criterion used PS3's for QC at their offices. It was also a great CD player. It's a shame that the PS5 cannot play audio/music CDs of any kind.
