(Jean Rollin, 1974)
Release date: 23 April 2024
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

The Demoniacs (Les Démoniaques) sees director Jean Rollin eschew his regular subject of vampirism for a brutal nautical tale of ritual horror and supernatural vengeance.

A gang of ruthless pirates, known as ‘the wreckers’, rape two survivors of a shipwreck. The women, now mute, are guided by a mysterious clown to a ruined castle, where they receive magical powers with which to exact their revenge on the gang.

Starring Joëlle Coeur (Schoolgirl Hitchhikers), John Rico (Blood Orgy of the She-Devils), Willy Braque (Lips of Blood), and Mireille Dargent (The Iron Rose), The Demoniacs is one of its director’s most shocking and violent tales of the fantastique.

We collectors are being spoiled with the work being put into these genre films. I was only familiar with Rollin in passing before the Indicator releases but I'm completely hooked. Now I have two more to add to the collection.

I keep meaning to venture into Rollin's work but there's so many of these coming out via Indicator, I don't really know where to begin.

same here, I know next to nothing about any of these release so far and I've been loving each and every one of them. The only one I didn't buy was Rape of the Vampire. The quality is off the scale good in regards to transfer/extras too.

Do what I do, say you’ll get to them one day, then buy all of them and still say you’ll get to them one day.

For real, I keep buying all of these Rollins 4k releases and so far I’ve watched one. Shiver of the Vampire. It was really enjoyable, i know you’d enjoy that one at least.

It's difficult to beat these high quality/packed editions for only around $30.00. Certainly makes it seem like some of the other companies are gouging a bit.

I still need to pick that one up. It doesn't seem like a prime example of his style and, oddly, not the best place to start with him, but I still want to give it a watch.

And it includes The Far Countries. I love early short films from directors.

Of what's currently available, I'd recommend starting with Lips of Blood. It's one of his best films, and also very representative of his work in general, so a good way to gauge if you'll dig his stuff.

The best ones to start w/ I'd say might be Fascination and/or Lips of Blood from the ones released so far + Shivers is a good one to gauge if you like his style too. But, I think if you wind up liking these you will need to buy them all, as even the 80 page booklets are a good read. Some might be getting close to going oop at this point. So the time might be now if you haven't jumped in already.

From the ones already available, I would go for Lèvres de Sang and Nuit des traquees first. Rose de fer might be his finest, most elegant accomplishment and Vampire nue is another of my personal favourites, but these two have not been upgraded to UHD yet.

My detailed suggestions in this post:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...5&postcount=84

By the way, Les Demoniaques is absolutely wonderful and indeed my favourite Rollin, the one that actually made me a fan (had seen a couple of his other films by the time I watched Les Demoniaques but I had not been immediately impressed). I don't see much love for this one around these forums, as very few seemed to be anticipating its UHD debut! Hopefully this Indicator release will enhance its popularity. I wouldn't suggest starting here, though; its sexual violence might feel objectionable, its over-the-top performances ludicrous and the overall cruelty off-putting for newcomers. Even the combination of swashbuckler and film fantastique is risque in itself (it is a " film expressioniste de J.R.", after all). The climax is pure poetry, though!

Lower your expectations and you'll enjoy them more. People oversell them imo.

Try The Shiver of the Vampires 4k and Lips of Blood 4k. Mention my name and get a free slap on the behind.

In looking over some of Jean Rollins later works beyond Two Orphan Vampires I'm not seeing very much that looks interesting. Maybe I'm missing something though

It's difficult because they could toss in Franco's "A Virgin Among The Living Dead" (1973) which has one scene shot by Rollin, or pseudonymous "Zombie Lake" (1980). "Schoolgirl Hitchhikers" (1973) is a pseudonymous work as is "Fly Me The French Way" (1974), which already has a UHD in France. Redemption/Salvation had combined titles previously. I hope that Powerhouse/Indicator doesn't do that.

Yeah, I see a lot of his adult titles where he goes by a different name listed. I wonder would they ever consider releasing the ones he did w/ Brigitte Lahaie? I mean they did include adult scenes as extras on a couple releases already.

I guess if they have to pick between Schoolgirl Hitchhikers and Fly Me The French Way, I'd rather have the one that ISN'T on UHD already somewhere. That the press release has Joelle Couer followed by Schoolgirl Hitchhikers as an example of what else she has been in makes me lean towards that possibly being the one. Labels generally really like to advertise other titles they have available. For example, Severin might advertise another Howard Vernon title they have rights to rather than something more well known like 'The Silence of the Sea' next to his mention. And I wouldn't be against 2 titles on a release, as long as it is not combining two films from his main filmography. Adding a psedonymous work on as a bonus to a main film from the same year would work for me. That said, I have a lot of interest in these and a lot of interest in knowing what will ultimately be released.

From what I've read of his pseudonymous works, Rollin only really felt SH, FMTFW, and Phantasmes (SoA) were more than simply jobs.

Also, after looking at Wikipedia, Salvation Films is linked to pages for Schoolgirl Hitchhikers and Countess X on parkcircus.com.

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall as Indicator was planning out the final title choices, and the order of priority for the upcoming release schedule. It’s gotta be quite an exciting trip, picking and choosing which vintage films get resurrected/fully upgraded, why, and when, some of which will come down to availability of best elements and cooperative rights-holders. I also assume that they’ll hold some of his most popular titles for later/last, so that the end of the Rollin 4k series closes out with a roar rather than a whimper in the sales revenue column.
