Disney Pixar's Gatto (2027)

Quote:
Today, Disney and Pixar re-affirmed once again their commitment to France’s Annecy Animation Festival, a world-class event the studios now use annually to deliver exclusive news and preview screenings to a global audience of animation fans.

In what opened as a regular preview showcase of upcoming “Elio,” DisneyPixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter unveiled a packed-Pixar slate featuring an all-new film, breaking the news to an ecstatic audience.

“Gatto”, expected in summer 2027, comes from the filmmaking team behind “Luca,” – director Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren. Casarosa’s directorial debut feature now turned fan-favorite due to his loveable characters and lush Italian settings, “Luca” was the first Pixar film to be released exclusively on Disney+, as Hollywood execs struggled to adapt to the pandemic’s shifting tides.

Since then, DisneyPixar has —to all animation fans’ greatest pleasure— pivoted back to a worldwide theatrical release strategy, paired with exclusive premieres. Annecy crowds may well be the very first audience to discover “Gatto” in June 2027.

This new Pixar film returns to Italy, Casarosa’s birth country, this time to Venice, where, after years of maneuvering the sea-side, extraordinary city, a black cat named Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives.

Indebted to a local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose…. unless the mysterious and dark side of Venice gets the better of him first.

The Annecy crowd cheered the announcement, as “Luca” continues to delight Pixar fans and family audiences alike. The feature was re-released last year, along with two other COVID-struck Pixar films “Red Alert” and “Soul”, and is now streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Hopefully, it is better than Shark Tale.

I thought Luca was pretty unfairly dismissed by a lot of people, it was completely delightful, so I have high hopes for this.

This new Pixar film returns to Italy, Casarosa’s birth country, this time to Venice, where, after years of maneuvering the sea-side, extraordinary city, a black cat named Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives.

A partial music-lover —at least, his tail is— and non-swimming feline who is indebted to a local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship with Maya, a street artist that adopts him against his will.

Together, those two individuals form an odd couple, but this relation might finally lead Nero to find his purpose…. unless the mysterious and dark side of Venice gets the better of him first.

The Annecy crowd cheered the announcement and went wild as Docter unveiled animation tests of a distinct, unique hand-painted look, something Pixar has never shown before. The film appears to be rich in colors from Venetian settings, and blends 2D hand paint textures with cutting-edge CG animation.

How about you tell us in your own words what you think is exciting about this project? You are obviously very knowledgable about animation!

Maybe instead of just re-posting stuff that’s already in the thread we could get some conversation going?

I think this might be the film Pixar finally decides on going into a much darker much more violent a lot less family friendly direction. If you're going to make a Gangster film it has to be violent, have characters getting shot to death, and have blood, and character betrayals. Also I guess this also means Pixars first anti-hero main character. As clearly he has done terrible things in the past, and has probably killed other gangsters in the past.

I honestly wouldn't mind if Pixar broke off from Disney, and became way less family friendly with their animated films. Animated films used to be a lot darker more violent, more adult, and even really bloody at times. I feel Pixar is limiting themselves by staying family friendly, and not getting more dark, and much more adult.

I honestly wouldn't mind if Pixar hired Martin Scorcese to direct an animated cat Gangster movie. It would make a lot of sense he's made a number of great Gangster movies. He fits better than picking people that don't know much about gangsters at all. He might make it more violent, and bloody sure, but he would fit so well.

Pixar hire Martin Scorcese to direct an animated cat Gangster movie you really should.

An animated cat Gangster film in the vein of Mean Streets, and Goodfellas directed by Martin Scorcese sounds amazing.

Why are you so obsessed with this "Scorcese" [sic] cat gangster movie? Why does Pixar need to go for more violent, edgy subject matter? Their films already resonate with a wide audience, children and adults alike. Needing a children's film studio to "grow up" by adding violence and gore is, frankly, a juvenile way of looking at media. If you don't like Pixar movies anymore, maybe you should find something else to watch instead of demanding they change to suit your tastes.

I enjoyed Luca so another movie like that, but with a new style of animation would be grand. Pixar has been in a rut, especially with its company identity basically assimilated into the larger Disney corporation. It's time they distinguish themselves again.

Last Pixar movie I watched was Luca, and I did greatly enjoy it, but for the most part I have lost interest in Pixar movies these days. I mostly stick with their older stuff, and anything after Luca I just haven't bothered with. I have no interest in buying Toy Story 4, The Good Dinosaur, Soul, The Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, Turning Red, possibly Elemental, Elio, Toy Story 5, or any future titles of theirs. I do still plan on buying Toy Story 1, and 2, Up, A Bug's Life, The Incredibles, and Monsters Inc., but everything else with the exception of Onward, and Luca both of which I own I just don't enjoy, or don't care for anymore. Elemental is probably the exception to the rule for me as I do want that one.

These are the films I don’t own from Pixar, and don't have any interest in owning on Blu-Ray.
Soul
The Incredibles 2
Cars movies nope
The Good Dinosaur
Brave meh
Lightyear
Ratatouille not a fan of this film meh
Monsters University
Turning Red
Finding Dory, and Nemo
Elio
Toy Story 3 I have it on DVD, but don't like it enough to upgrade it.

That's why I said they need to break off of Disney, and leave Disney behind, and become independent. So they can have the freedom to do their own things kind of like Henry Selick, and Laika Studios. I don't think there's anything wrong with Pixar becoming independent.

There is definitely an edge to Pixar animation that Disney animation can’t even dream of achieving.

Lightyear, Elemental and Inside Out definitely represent the cutting edge of big-budget animation.

It would be kinda funny if this qualifies for a Michael Franzese review. He'd be like, kids, okay, let me tell you what the life was really about.

The Greatest Mafia Movies and TV Shows Ranked By Former Mob Boss - YouTube
I wonder where he would rank Black Rain, and The Sopranos. Not to mention some of the more obscure, and lesser known mafia movies.

Also yes I know Pixar won't change their family friendly image, but I wish they would. However, I do think breaking off from Disney is definitely something that might possibly happen in the future.

I'm similar to you except Ratatouille is a favorite of mine and I do like the prequels/sequels to their classic 2000s movies like Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, and Monsters University. Out of their new movies, I think Luca is the best. Onward isn't a huge favorite but it was better than I expected it to be so I do own that as well. I haven't buy any Pixar movies since Onward except for Luca.

I also agree that Brave is meh. Didn't like it when it came out but Pixar has been so mediocre with their original movies since then that Brave has grown on me.

Legally, I'm not sure if they could break away from Disney or if Disney would let them but that would be ideal. Many people have noted that Pixar's Golden Age (90s-2000s) was from when they were independent. I think after Toy Story 3 is when all their new movies were ones greenlighted after the Disney buyout. You can sense the drop in quality.
