Quote:
(Jean Rollin, 1971)
Release date: 25 April 2023
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

Jean Rollin’s third feature film, 1971’s The Shiver of the Vampires (Le Frisson des vampires), established themes and visual motifs to which he would return throughout his career, blending horror, eroticism, fairy tale, and surrealism to create his unique cinema of the fantastique.

Arriving at a decrepit chateau for their honeymoon, young newlyweds undergo a series of surreal and sinister encounters, and come to realise that they are the prey of the resident vampires...

With performances from Sandra Julien (I Am Frigid... Why?) and Marie-Pierre Castel (Lips of Blood), ravishing cinematography from Rollin’s regular collaborator Jean-Jacques Renon, and a thrilling jazz-rock score by Acanthus, The Shiver of the Vampires is regarded as one of Rollin’s greatest films.

I’ve been on a vampire movie kick the last couple of years, what’s the word on this and the Orphan one that was also announced? Are they artsy good or schlocky good?

Thanks!

SHIVERS is a mixture of the artsy and the schlocky. I wouldn't say it's good, but it's perfect witching hour viewing.

Shiver is a very unusual and creative vampire movie. The score is one of a kind. You can watch it any time you want. I just dropped $$ on the Wicked Vision BR but I'm not upset about this.

I will order any Rollin films in 4K in the hopes that increased sales will lead to the ones I really want (Fascination, The Iron Rose, Grapes of Death, etc...)

This 4k release just dropped to $29.99 on Amazon. Excellent. Makes it even easier to support, in hopes of seeing more of Rollin's catalog in 4k. It would be interesting to see which of his titles sold best in the Redemption blu ray line. I am absolutely down for Fascination, Grapes of Death, The Iron Rose, and The Living Dead Girl, which are personal favorites of mine, not in any particular order. They'd be instant 4k buys as well.

I wonder if Indicator will do some of the Jess Franco titles. AWFUL DR ORLOFF could definetly do with a new master...plus maybe the elusive Spanish version too.

It's a shame this will be a restoration from a 4k scan of an internegative rather than of the original camera negative, but it could still be a nice bump up from the blu ray. I wonder if the OCN is missing, destroyed, or damaged beyond use. I took a spin through the Redemption blu again today, and at the very least, hopefully Indicator will take the opportunity with this new 4k release to clean up the copious damage that is likely to be present. I'm really curious to see what they come up with for the new release in terms of the quality of the master, and am keeping my expectations tempered, while still being thrilled that ANY Rollin title is suddenly receiving a 4k uhd release.

Agree with Jedilips, buying all of these in the hopes sales do well enough for more and more Rollin in 4k.

Hoping for:

The Nude Vampire
Lips of Blood
Fascination
Grapes of Death

So the review for this is up, and I noticed this interesting bit in the Overall Score and Recommendation section. I don't often speak up about the site's review process, but this one strikes me as particularly odd and I'd like to ask for some clarification on a few things. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this for me.

At the moment, I only have the Blu-ray disc that is included in this 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K makeover looks spectacular and I assume that it is jaw-droppingly beautiful when viewed in native 4K.
1. As far as I know this is not a UHD/BD combo pack, and a separate BD set is available.

2. Why is BD.com posting a review of the UHD set when the reviewer doesn't actually have in-hand the UHD disc that's (supposedly) being reviewed?

3. Considering that there is a possibility that the UHD version will not look as good as the BD version (I am not assuming this is the case here, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time it happened), why is the reviewer HIGHLY RECOMMENDING the UHD set based on an assumption, instead of actual experience?

I had the same thoughts when I read the review this morning and saw the notation about not having the 4K disc yet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Svet is out of line here, posting a review for a specific product that is not actually in hand. The review also seems to contain the implication that this is a 4K UHD / 2K Blu-ray combo pack. This goes against all of the other information out there that points to these being a single-disc release, whether 4K or Blu-ray. Maybe there was some pressure to get a review posted for some reason, but this seems really unprofessional, it raises questions about the legitimacy of the posted reviews, and defeats the purpose of having a reliable, objective website for this community.

I changed the listing to reflect that it's a single format release with no Blu-ray included.

Is anyone the least bit surprised considering...you know...??

I do have a question if anyone wants to give it a go...

Am I correct in my takeaway that the UK version is actually getting released a few weeks after the US release... and it's a UK company??

Or... does the US listing on this site just not have the correct release date??

It says that the US version hits the streets tomorrow... but that the UK version doesn't street until early May...

BTW - I ordered mine directly from the UK Indicator site... I have personal reasons why I prefer a UK version of an Indicator release (which I won't go into here)...

Anyone know the answer to this discrepancy?
