Default Auro 3D has better sound quality, ideal fo reference quality 100GB 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Auro 3D has better sound quality then Dolby Atmos and DTS X and should be used on reference quality 100GB 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies and music titles

If movies on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format were released on 100GB discs with 7.1 PCM soundtracks, then existing Blu-ray players over HDMI along with old 13 year 7.1 A/V receivers from the year 2008 would work with the 7.1 PCM core audio track. Auro 3D uses the 7.1 PCM core soundtrack on Blu-ray discs to offer true 96khz 24-bit playback between 11.1 to a maximum of 26.1 channels. With Auro 13.1 being the most common version of Auro 3D used by consumers at home. For very large home theater rooms, consumers use AuroMax 26.1 channels. Also Auro 3D is the only immerse audio format that offers both 3 layers of audio along with true 96khz 24-bit playback. Dolby Atmos and DTS X are limited to a maximum of 48Khz on the Blu-ray format, where as Auro-3D is true 96khz at 24 bit. Object based sounds in Dolby Atmos are mono sounds according to the latest Widescreen Review magazine article. Auro 3D has two quadraphonic areas above each other. Dolby Atmos uses two layers of sound and Auro 3D has true 3 layers of sound. With the top layer 3 being ceiling speakers for special effects like airplane flyovers, layer 2 being the height speakers for immersive sound reflections, and layer 1 surround being the 7.1 PCM core layer. Layer 2 height and layer 3 ceiling are decoded from the Auro 3D soundtrack in the 7.1 PCM core on Blu-ray discs. 100GB 4K Blu-ray discs have enough room for both 4K movies and 7.1 uncompressed PCM soundtrack to offer up to 26.1 channels of Auro 3D audio.

While there are many movies that have been released in the commercial movie theaters using 11.1 and 13.1 Auro 3D audio technology, the Blu-ray format has not been releasing that many titles using the 7.1 PCM audio core that is needed for Auro 3D. Auro 3D can also work with 2.0 PCM and 5.1 PCM but 7.1 PCM core is ideal for the best Auro 3D experience.

Currently the problem with having 3 different audio formats to choose from on 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray (Dolby Atmos, DTS X, and Auro 3D), is that each system has different speaker placement requirements. Therefore, consumers need to compromise in their speaker setup in order to use all 3 different audio formats. …”Dolby Atmos works with top loudspeakers at 45 to 55 degree elevation”s, and …”Auro-3D uses an average 30-degree elevation.”

Hopefully the movie studios that release 4K Blu-ray discs well start using 100GB discs with 7.1 PCM core audio and Auro 3D immerse audio. There are A/V receivers from Denon and Marantz that offer all 3 audio formats including Auro 3D. Yamaha plans on offering a firmware update to some of their A/V receivers so that they offer Auro 3D. Currently Pioneer does not offer Auro 3D on their A/V receivers (maybe in the future). And remember even old year 2008 Pioneer Elite A/V receivers and other brands can playback the 7.1 PCM core audio that is being sent over HDMI from the Blu-ray player. So consumers with old equipment could enjoy their 7.1 surround sound setup until they upgrade to 11.1 to 26.1 Auro 3D.

On pages 22,24, and 26-35 there is a excellent article in the July/August 2021 Widescreen Review magazine called “One Loudspeaker Layout For All Immersive Audio formats”. In that article it mentions why Auro 3D is a much better audio format when compared to Dolby Atmos and DTS X.

That sounds interesting but my Sony receiver doesn't support it and a 13-channel receiver would be out of my budget. The article seems to be pay-walled by the way.

Your Sony A/V receiver if its a HDMI model in the last 13 years should support 7.1 PCM or 5.1 PCM core audio. In the future if you upgraded your A/V receiver and wanted 11.1 to 26.1 channel object based audio you woudl be able to do so using the existing Blu-ray discs that one rents or purhases using Auro 3D.

Auro 3D A/V receivers that support 13.2 are already on the consumer market. More brands and models are to come. In order for Auro 3D to be successful like 13.1 Dolby Atmos and 11.1 DTS X, more Blu-ray titles need to use 7.1 PCM core audio with Auro 3D encoded soundtracks.

Just for clarification in case someone is not aware. In order to use Dolby Atmos, DTS X Pro, and Auro 3D one needs to place their Blu-ray player on bitstream for audio. 99.9% of Blu-ray players and 4K Blu-ray players well work with bitstream (even some of the 2006 first generation Blu-ray player models). Then if the A/V receiver supports Dolby Atmos, DTS X Pro, and Auro 3D, those audio formats well automatically engage and playback. However, for example if one owns an old 13 year old year 2008 Pioneer Elite 7.1 channel A/V receiver, then core 7.1 Dolby TrueHD, or core 7.1 DTS-HD Master audio, or core 7.1 PCM plays back. Auro 3D core audio is 7.1 PCM.

I've read on some other forums that some people prefer to use the Auro 3D upmixer on their receiver over simply playing discs in Atmos or DTS:X.

Many movies in USA commercial movie theaters use a minimum of 11.1 Auro 3D and a maximum of 26.1 channels. Also many modern A/V receivers use Auro 3D.

There is also some USA Blu-ray releases that use Auro 3D. George McCrae: Love uses 9.1 Auro 3D. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Georg...lu-ray/153664/

9.1 Auro 3D is also used on the Aelita Blu-ray title which is a USA release.

Off topic comment, I see that Regal offers movies in 4FX4 with motion seats and other environmental effects.

For music releases on any format, the discs themselves are usually the same internationally and are never region-coded. Sound devices are also usually the same internationally. The Auro-3D capability is only there because of the demands of the European market.

Default AURO-3D Gets A New Home With The Goerdyna Group

Auro-3D is better quality then Dolby Atmos and DTS X Pro, but is much less popular audio codec at this time. The following are select quotes from page 6 of the November/December 2024 issue of Widescreen Review magazine.

Select quotes from artilce

“AURO-3D has had tough challenges over the past few year against its subsequent competitors Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Originally, it was hoped that the cutting-edge Immersive Surround sound format would be a rival to both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X but Van Baelen and team were unable to match the resources of Dolby and Experi (DTS’ parent) to equip the studios preparing Immersive Sound soundtracks. Although the AURO-3D and AuroMatic codecs are available on select AVRs and audio processors, they do not have the market penetration of the competitive platforms.”

“As a result, in 2022, Auro Technologies filed for bankruptcy to seek a stronger partner with the resources to further development of its technologies and its marketing. In July 2022, Saffelberg Investment Group acquired all assets, teams, and rights to AURO-3D and founded a new company, NEWAURO BV, to further support the growth of the format and technology suite across all markets.”

“AURO-3D: Now included in select AVRs from Onkyo, Integra, and Pioneer.”

“In early 2024, the Saffelberg Investment Group revealed a new company name (NEWAURO) headed by a new CEO Rudy Van Duppen.”

“Combining resources and expertise, Goerdyna Group and NewAuro aim to accelerate the development of AURO-3D and expand its reach across multiple markets. Goer Dynamics B.V. will spearhead live concert streaming in high resolution, immersive sound for automotive, and next-level extended reality applications for gaming and entertainment.”

I'm good with ATMOS.

My processor (AV7702mkII) supports Auro as a paid ad on which I will most likely never do.

AURO-3D, AuroMatic and Dolby Atmos are not codecs, they are audio formats. Dolby TrueHD, DD+, etc. are codecs.

Better sound quality than lossless? Lossless is lossless. Any difference is inherently the mix, not the codec or surround format.

Lossless can be 1.0 to 26.1 channels depending on the lossless audio format. If the lossless is native 7.1 channels then yes when unzipped by the A/V receiver or Blu-ray player the soundtrack becomes 7.1 LPCM and therefore DTS-HD Master audio and Dolby TrueHD sound exactly the same since they all become LPCM when unzipped.

However if the lossless soundtrack uses 26.1 channels with two layers of height speakers with native mixing of the ceiling speakers and height speakers then a lossless audio codec like Auro 3D needs to be used. 3 layers of speakers requires better lossless audio codecs that can handle 26.1 channels or more. Some movies are mixed for 13.1 channels however many DTS X and Dolby Atmos encoded movies are mixed for only 11.1 channels and sometimes 9.1 channels.

A/V receivers with Dolby Atmos were released back in 2014 and then A/V receivers with DTS X were released back in 2015, all because that was the latest audio technology of the Blu-ray format. I own several movies encoded with 11.1 DTS X and some movies that are encoded in 9.1 to 13.1 Dolby Atmos.

While I would like to see 13.1 Auro 3D or higher mixes with 7.1 LPCM core audio for older A/V receivers, at this point Auro 3D and DTS X are more of a niche audio codecs. However, when buying a new A/V receiver I would want to make sure all three lossless audio codecs are included, even though very few Blu-ray titles use Auro 3D audio technology.

I use a AV Processor but I did use A/V receivers years ago.

Feel like it's so important I should Download the $200 upgrade to my audio processor for a format with no studio support ?

Lately many of my favorite band's back catalog has been releasing in ATMOS and even more ATMOS music is easily available on music streaming services. Do ANY of those support this Auro stuff? Does anyone ?

It's so good .... no one makes content using it.

More is more. More is not better. Like I said before, it only matters how the sound is mixed. Like the Auro3D of Twister vs Atmos of the exact same movie, the Atmos is more preferable.

Exactly. Just listen to the sound of silence in triple layered format. I want to champion Auro3D too but the lack of movies/concerts with Auro3D makes the format pointless, especially this late in the game.

Auro3D is a popular audio format in commercial movie theaters. However, over the last few years since Dolby Atmos has a monopoly with 99% of 4K Blu-ray releases using Dolby Atmos over DTS X. This means that both Auro 3D and DTS X are at risk of going away. Almost all A/V receivers that support Dolby Atmos also support DTS X starting in the year 2015. There is also DTS X Pro that is offered on the latest A/V receivers.

If physical optical media like Blu-ray is replaced by streaming, then the demand for A/V receivers will be less. My family members have had lossless 7.1 audio on their Pioneer Elite SC-07 A/V receiver since the year 2008. That is 17+ years of A/V receivers being made with lossless audio. Unless streaming starts offering lossless audio, what could happen is A/V receivers are no longer made or very cheap A/V receivers start being made with lossy audio codecs only. My point is the only reason we have lossless audio on A/V receivers for the last 17+ years is because the Blu-ray format launched back in the year 2006. If the Blu-ray format would not have existed on the timeline then all A/V receivers for the last 17+ years would only have lossy audio codecs. The Blu-ray format over the last 19 years has been one of the main reasons why advances in lossless audio, improved resolution, 3D, and HDR technology has been developed for the home. Without the Blu-ray format in the timeline some of those technologies might not have every been developed especially lossless 7.1 audio codecs
