Default The Wedding Banquet (1993)

Many thanks to Brad1963 for posting this news in the Olive Films thread, I thought it deserved a thread of its own:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/the-wedd..._BfUqpNf264Vaw

No Amazon link yet, but I'm sure it'll be up soon.

I've been working my way through all of Ang Lee's films since seeing Billy Lynn last year, and this was one of the last ones I needed to see. Glad to see this making its way to BD, I almost ordered an old DVD just to watch it.

Now we just need his first film, Pushing Hands, in an English-friendly release. It's only available in an ancient OOP DVD that goes for like $100.

Still no listing on Amazon. Strange, with it coming out in less than a month.

Remember when you used to see a new major studio release was coming out and you'd wonder what the extras would be? I miss those days... Still, I'll probably upgrade to this blu eventually.

This is the film that started my love affair with Ang Lee. A very welcome surprise!

Is it possible this is a Best Buy exclusive? There's still no Amazon listing for it, which is something I've never seen before just a few weeks from release.

No, because other stores such as WM and BN have it available for order.

Still no link on Amazon. Weird. Guess I'll be buying it elsewhere.

A beautiful little film that makes me cry every time I watch it. Glad to see small, indy films like this getting Blu treatment. Now how about Torch Song Trilogy?!?!

I watched the disc tonight. It looks decent, and it has a 20 min SD making-of featurette dating to the film's 2004 DVD premiere, consisting of interviews with Ang Lee and James Schamus.

Be aware, the disc bizarrely defaults to having no subtitles on. You have to go into the menu to choose either English subs for just the Mandarin dialogue, or English subs for all dialogue, for the hard of hearing.

For those that understand Mandarin or French, Carlotta's French Blu-ray features 90 minutes in extras produced by Fiction Factory, that sound highly likely to be English friendly.

Eat Drink Man Woman has 46 minutes in extras.

A American remake is coming next year from the director of Fire Island, released by Bleecker Street.

Hope a new English friendly release happens because of the remake! Also one of the rare remakes I’m excited for!

Andrew Ahn is fantastic! 'Fire Island' was fun, but 'Spa Night' and 'Driveways' are superb!

Interesting that James Schamus, co-writer of the original, has returned as co-writer on this one too.

BTW, I'm not sure the new one can be called an American remake, it's being filmed in Vancouver (though that doesn't necessarily mean it's set there). The original film takes place entirely in NYC. Big portions of it are not in English, but I'd imagine the same may be true of the new version.

I didn't think Fire Island was as good as I had hoped. I'll watch a remake, but nothing will come close to the original. Such an underrated gem of a movie.
