Default Best July 4th Movies

With the American holiday coming up, I thought it’d be fun to discuss your favorite July 4th films. Whether set on July 4, or they remind you of the holiday or set around the holiday, name them & talk about them here!

1) Obviously, we have to start with Independence Day. I think it’s fair to say it’s a bonafide “Classic” now. We watch it every July 4. Feels weird if we don’t.

2) Olympus Has Fallen. I really love the original film. July 4th feels like a perfect time to watch the film. Terrorists taking over the White House, and one man stands in their way. It’s corny, but still cool. And it was nice seeing Gerard Butler back in the action genre after years of chick flicks following “300.”

3) Men In Black. Just feels like a perfect July 4th holiday. Idk why, but it does.

4) Live Free or Die Hard. Actually set over the July 4th holiday. Nice seeing John McClane back in action for the first time since 1995!

Discuss away!

The greatest 4th of July movie ever made is clearly 1776.

Oh! The first Blockbuster. How could I forget Jaws (might be because I don’t own it). It’s a hard watch on tv. Just takes forever; too many commercials . Need to look into getting the UHD.

Great lead character in Mel Gibson. And a loathsome villain in Jason Isaacs

The Sandlot. There is only a brief 4th of July scene, but when I think of Summer and that particular day, I think of baseball.

Oh, and one of my favorite movies opens on the 4th of July - Zodiac. There's nothing else about that movie that reminds me of that date, though.

Yankee Doodle Dandy with James Cagney.

It’s a great biography of George M. Cohan (who was born on July 4th), but it’s also a knockout performance by Cagney. Who would have thought he’d win his only Oscar for a singing and dancing performance as opposed to a drama? Some of his dance steps will amaze you.

I'll go obscure here and say that I wish the TV movies by Jean Shepherd were more readily available in decent quality. I grew up with them.

I wish I could thank this post 100 times! Old-School Big Hollywood Studio entertainment at its best!

Last July 4th, my wife and I watched the original I Know What You Did Last Summer. We definitely recommend it as a non-traditional choice.
