Yes!!! I never thought I'd see the day. Criminally underrated film. Soderbregh loves it, talks about it in his book of interviews with Richard Lester, "Getting Away With it".
Juggernaut often gets unfairly lumped in with the disaster movies of the 70s, which is wildly inaccurate. It's a suspense thriller about a bomb disposal squad on an ocean liner and an excellent police procedural about the cops back on land, led by Anthony Hopkins, whose wife and kids are on the ship, hunting for the mad bomber. Except for a few scenes illustrating the lives of the various passengers on the ship, it's nothing like the soapy disaster movies, much as I love them. First-rate film!! So glad it'll be making its way to BD, the ancient DVD is 4:3 letterboxed. Last edited by James Luckard; 06-11-2014 at 06:37 PM. |

Actually, despite what the packaging says, the new BD is 1.85:1, as the screencaps here show:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Jugge...9/#Screenshots The old MGM DVD was 1.66:1 It's not a change that damages the film to me and American audiences would have seen it this way in 1974 anyway, presumably. I do wonder which is Richard Lester's preferred format, but I'll bet he shot with both in mind for UK and American theaters. Last edited by James Luckard; 09-11-2014 at 06:03 AM. |

[Show spoiler] 1.66:1 would have fairly sizable borders on the sides though, like this cap from ON THE BEACH: [Show spoiler] Does your Juggernaut BD look like that? If so, is it possible that Kino Lorber released two versions by accident? The back of the case does say 1.66 after all. The people with ON THE BEACH BDs with audio sync issues certainly seem to have different discs from mine. I'm not trying to be funny or sarcastic, genuinely wondering. I watched this last night. It's such an underrated film, it really holds up. A taut thriller with just the right sprinkling of comic relief and genuine human emotion that never spills over into sentimentality.
The image looks as good as this film is ever going to look, I suspect, which is pretty darned good. The film looks like it was shot yesterday (on 1970s film stock, obviously), with lifelike colors and tremendous detail. There are a few specks of dirt over the course of the film, but on the whole it's the best I could have expected for this forgotten classic. The 1.85 framing looks fine. Most of the film seems to have been shot handheld, with framing that's very loose, and I'm sure both the 1.66 of the DVD and the 1.85 here are ratios Lester knew the film would be seen in, since it was a UK production, but also intended for wide American release. Watching the film reminded me what a huge shame it is that he retired so young, he really is gifted. And when you watch his mid-to-late-70s films, it's easy to see why he's Soderbergh's favorite director, their styles have a great deal in common. |
