Default Come To Daddy (2020)

Quote:
Synopsis: Norval's life has been, to put it lightly, difficult. Currently living home with his mother, the troubled young man is coming off alcohol-related struggles. So when he receives an unexpected letter from his estranged father requesting a visit, Norval catches a bus up to his dad's secluded and scenic waterfront home. Maybe reconnecting with his father will give Norval the emotional fulfillment he's been lacking. Before long, though, he notices something off about his dad, an uneasy feeling triggered by inappropriate comments and a possible over-dependence on booze. Norval quickly realizes that his hope of father/son bonding is doomed. Instead of a family reunion, he finds himself in waking nightmare.

Starring: Elijah Wood and Stephen McHattie
This one's a lot of fun. The trailer pulls mostly from specific scenes because the film pivots on a twist that occurs fairly early in the film. I'll admit I enjoyed the story before the twist, but once it was revealed where it was going I was content with the result by the end.

Wood is fantastic in this film and his um, interesting haircut and mustache never gets old to look at. His scenes with McHattie (also doing fantastic work) are tense as the verbal exchanges become increasingly barbed. I'll only spoil that the movie contains some gory action, the most notable of which involves the instrument Wood holds in the poster above.

This one's a pretty wild ride. Not sure what trailers and such reveal, but I'd recommend going into the movie with as few spoilers as possible. Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.

Just watched this film and quite enjoyed it. However, I was about equally amused and irritated to discover that the UK release by Signature Entertainment is partially arsed up: they've muxed the subtitle track from a completely different film and erroneously marked both (English) audio tracks as Japanese in the metadata tags. Specifically, the subtitles are for FIRST LOVE, which Signature Entertainment released on the same day (2nd of March, 2020). The actual English SDH subtitles for COME TO DADDY, which were included on the USA and Australian releases, are therefore missing.

Given that I only got round to removing the shrinkwrap from this March 2020 release in July 2024 and I have so far found zero evidence of Signature Entertainment doing anything to fix it, my expectations are low, but I've emailed them anyway. Hopefully they do at least something about it. Having no subtitles (y'know, for the right film) is a pretty massive accessibility issue.
