Nah, he’s just old-school Italian-American.

He's made films about a single working mom in the southwest, a psychotic loner cabbie, an MGM musical with Liza, a mean and broken boxer, an obsessive fan would-be stand-up comic, a guy lost in funky SoHo late at night, pool hall hustlers, an artist and his younger muse, a remake of a classic Hollywood genre thriller, a period high society love story, the Dalai Lama of Tibet, Howard Hughes, an investigation at an asylum, an orphan child learning of early cinema, and now the killing of indigenous people for their land and oil. Plus, a TV pilot about the 70s music industry, and numerous documentaries mostly about music.

So, no, he doesn't just make films about gangsters or Jesus. I count "Bringing Out the Dead" and "Silence" as being films about Jesus, though. And "Mean Streets" is about Jesus AND gangsters, even more so in "Who's That Knocking at My Door?"
