Plaion is releasing the TV-Movie "Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie" in Germany on UHD on February 13th.

Note: currently the 4K is locked "B", see posts below.

Plaion responded to an e-mail I sent about this release. Here are the questions I asked:

I see that it will have DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 in German and English. Do you know if the 4K UHD disc will have Dolby Vision or HDR10, or will it be SDR?

Also, do you know if the master has any German titles or text screens, or will those be in English?

And the response:

hello, the Dolby Vision will be included and as there will be no German text panels in the film as we are using the original master.

I'd love to see them release the whole of the original series in 4K with DV or standard HDR at least.

Also with 5.1 Audio for the later episodes as they were mixed at that I believe.

Bad news. I just got this. Unfortunately for whatever reason, Plaion decided not just to region lock the included Blu-Ray, but has also region locked the UHD. It really is unfortunate, because this is a English language Video-Master. Credit's are in English. Audio is DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 for German and English and eventhough the cover doesn't mention it, English subtitles are included as well. It also comes with a reversable cover, so that the FSK-Sticker can be hidden. The Slip-Cover doesn't have a sticker.
So for international audiances, this would be a great release. But yeah. Region B Lock.

Hi Cap.T,

When you say that the 4K UHD disc is locked, did you test it or are you just going off the packaging? I just want to be clear because I have this on order from jpc and will need to cancel if the disc is locked.

I did test it. I import a lot of Discs so I have a Player that is Region A and a second Player that is Region B. In my Region A-Player the UHD reports, that the player has the wrong Region setting and can't be watched. In my Region B-Player it start's up without problems.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I checked my order a few minutes after your first post and it could no longer be cancelled, so it looks like I'll be receiving a copy, anyway. If it doesn't work on my UDP-203, I guess I'll have to wait until I get a multiregion 4K UHD player.

This is very annoying from Plaion and I have to wonder if they have other locked 4K UHD discs which we don't know about, yet.

The UHD rules stablish all discs have to be region free, so, how could a contract break the rules and the copyright holder force them to break them?

I do wonder if most of the time the region locks on UHD are just mistakes that never get fixed.

I got my disc in today and can also confirm it is locked. I e-mailed Plaion about fixing the disc and we'll see what they say:

Yeah, I can't blame Plaion for not doing anything, as It's probably not a popular title and the region locking will not help things. I'm resigned to it not being corrected.

I really want to watch this in full 4K quality, so I guess it will just have to wait until I get another 4K UHD player, one which can play Region B Blu-rays.

Radio silence after an initial "we’re looking into it" is usual with Plaion. Their past replacement programs have all been this way - sometimes up to 6 months. They did work behind the scenes and ultimately replaced these discs though, although the issues were different.

I therefore wouldn’t completely give up on this if they’re aware of the issue.

I never finished the series, haven't seen the final season this was during the time a lot of great tv shows were released and I stopped watching Monk

Hopefully Kino Lorber or Shout Factory do a US 4K Blu-ray.
