I hope Mamo will fare better than the 2 previous 4K UHD attempts from TMS.

Rights to Mamo also belongs to TMS, so it will be same restoration. VAP only distributes it. Same as Cobra and Joe was released by Fox.
There is also mentioning on amazon page that second Lupin III Movie - The Castle of Cagliostro will be released on 4k UHD by VAP. |

By the way here's the trailer that debuted last year for Mamo's "MX4D" presentation. Presumably this could be a basis or a general idea as to how the UHD will look like.

It's a solid Lupin adventure. It can get a little surreal later in the film (Even by Lupin standards) but I still enjoyed it. Yuji Ohno's score is fantastic. I wouldn't mind getting a Discotek Blu...or they do a really, really limited print of this UHD (Granted, if the UHD isn't Joe or Cobra bad).

Keep in mind that unlike Cagliostro (which is co-owned by Studio Ghilbi and was reported to be a 4k SDR restoration from a 8k scan), Mamo is 100% owned by TMS and has a 2k master from their elements. The footage in the trailer if i'm not mistaken looked like an older 2k master and may not be the final look until we see screenshots from the disc. Going by their previous UHD efforts, I have a gut feeling that we're gonna be in for quite a "ride" if they decide to take a different "approach" for the UHD than what we see on the trailer.

No it isnt. TMS, if anything, sub-licensed it to Ghibli. None of the international releases (Including Discoteks Blu) nor the original Japanese Blu make any mention of Ghibli on the packaging.

Seems like they just applied the same LUT as Joe and Cobra...sigh. I'll have to either hunt down a VAP disc or hopefully Discotek can save us.

I informed Justin about this. Who knows whatll happen. If they can somehow get the 4K scan with zero DNR, wed be in luck.

I just hope The Castle of Cagliostro is a Studio Ghibli/Walt Disney Japan release instead of a TMS/VAP release.
With Ghibli, at least there will be no DNR. And it will be in HDR10+ and will be in a ridiculously high bitrate on a triple-layer disc, to boot. |
