Default Will all blu-rays work in all players

I have a ps3 and i know that it will support profile 2.0 but i was wondering if all disks that work with profile 2.0 will still work with old players?

yes they will work on any BR player. You just wont be able to access the additional features of the 1.1 or 2.0 disks. But the movie will pay just dandy

They should. Though I don't know about that Samsung Blu-ray Disc players. I have heard a lot about that one having problems.

If you want all features, then look for a 2.0 compatible player

All new models are profile 1.1 which supports everything but online

2.0 Player is the highest profile currently. The Panny DMP-50 i believe is the first 2.0 profile player that will be coming out within the next few months. Sony just announced two new 2.0 players released here soon as well.

My impression was that version 2.0 is going to deal mostly with BD-LIVE. So if you just want to watch your movies any of the current players should be fine.

I think the 1.1 is all the general public really needs, I doubt I will even use very many of the features of 1.1, and I wont be using 2.0 (I don't have a phone line anywhere near my TV) don't see the need for internet connection anyway, I just want to see my movie!

It would be silly if they didn't. My impression is that if you want the advanced special features you need a 1.1 player. But all movies will work on all players.

am i right in thinking the most important part of the hardware is the ability to upgrade the firmware and that the ps3 is the most upgradeable piece of hardware out there?

as the ps3 is relatively cheap given it's got a HDD, plays games, has internet browsing and is software upgradeable via wi-fi etc etc, is there anything out that's really as good?

Once Profile 2 SA players hit you should be able to safely grab one as they should all be upgradeable.

Currently, the difference in profiles also effect hardware. Profile 1.1 added 256m of local storage along with PiP ability. Profile 2.0 will up that to 1gig of local storage on require network port. I think from 2 on you should be fine as you can upgrade firmware on just about all stand alone now. Just the hardware changes is why PS3 is so future proof, due to it already having a HDD and network adapter.

I was planning on snagging a Stand alone myself once the war was done, but my PS3 will be fine until 2.0 SA's come out.

I have a PS3 and have not used the PIP yet. It is nice to have the internet connection for firmware updates.

2.0 players won't have a modem built in, they'll just have an ethernet port.

Will all blu-rays work in all players?

NO, THEY WON'T!!!!!

Have we forgotten about Region Coding? Both BluRay and that other HD system (the name of which escapes me ) have Region Coding, but haven't made much use of it yet. Now that there is only BluRay, you can be sure that the film rights holders will insist on systematic use of Region Coding!

A salient point.

Sony: Only day-and-dates are region coded, however some older releases was region coded. For Releases in Europe and Australia, all releases are region free (like Spider Man 3 for example that even is released sooner in Australia and is region free.)
Disney: Only day-and-dates are region coded, however some older releases was region coded.
Lionsgate: Have a mix of region coded and region free discs. Will probably only region code their newer in the future.
Fox: Have only released region coded discs in USA but have almost only released region free discs in Europe and Australia lately.
MGM: Have some region free discs but have followed Fox otherwise.
Paramount: All discs are region free.
Warner: All discs are region free.
New Line: Only day-and-dates are region coded.
Starz/Anchor Bay: Have only released region free discs.
Magnonlia Pictures: Mostly region free discs but have some region coded also.
R&B Films: All discs are region free.
Image Entertainment: All discs are region free.
Eagle Rock Entertainment: All discs are region free.
BBS Video: All discs are region free.

In Europe are even more exclusive Blu-ray distributors region free.

Nothing, just as an earlier BD player, Samsung has had a few issues with assuring compatibility with the early titles. It should just require firmware updates [that's on the CE to provide in this case].
