United Kingdom The Slumber Party Massacre 1 + 2 4K UHD (Black Label 040) (101 Films)

Packshot:
[Show spoiler]

Order: 101 Films - HMV
Release date: 18th November, 2024

Quote:
101 Films presents iconic slashers The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) and Slumber Party Massacre II (1987), on 4K UHD and Blu-ray in the UK for the first time. Conceived as a parody of the slasher movie, The Slumber Party Massacre was eventually shot as a straightforward horror, leading to some uniquely dark humour both intended and otherwise. The more overtly comical Slumber Party Massacre II was the first of several sequels in what was the first horror series to be exclusively written and directed by women, providing a fresh perspective within an historically male-dominated genre.

The Slumber Party Massacre:

It’s going to be the slumber party to end all slumber parties. With her parents away, Trish (Michelle Michaels) is planning a weekend of high jinks fun for her high school basketball team friends - a slumber party at her house. She’s not sure if she wants to invite the newly arrived and talented Valerie (Robin Stille) but someone who is definitely coming is Russ Thorn. Locked up in a mental institution since 1969, Thorn, the nastiest of the driller killer psychos, has escaped and is heading back to town intent on more bloody mayhem. This night no one’s going to get much sleep - there’s potato chips, drinks, dope, severed heads, blood and gore-a-plenty.

Slumber Party Massacre II:

The only sane survivor of The Slumber Party Massacre (1982), Courtney (Crystal Bernard) dreams of the drill murderer returning. She can’t shake the horrible feeling that she and her friends will be viciously tormented and brutally butchered. Again, and again the nightmare returns. No one believes her, until it’s too late. The drill killer returns, reincarnated as an evil rocker, he methodically stalks them one by one and violently gores them to death ... can anyone survive Slumber Party Massacre II.

Special Features:

Limited edition booklet includes: ‘Holding a mirror to the male gaze’ by Sarah Appleton & ‘Teenage Dreams: The Slumber Party Massacre II’ by Keri O’Shea

Slumber Party Massacre:
• Sleepless Nights: The Making of the Slumber Party Massacre
• Audio commentary with director Amy Holden Jones and actors Michael Villella and Debra De Liso

Besides the booklet, it looks to be the same extras as the Scream Factory release, which is who they're licensing it from. The bigger perk here is the films are on separate discs, and in separate cases, rather than SF's release which had them on the same disc/case.

Yeah, they have the same extras.

Realistically I probably won't end up grabbing this but it looks like a really cool set. Both films are about 75 mins long so tbh they don't exactly need their own discs but that's some cool packaging regardless. And I wanna read the essays lol.

I never picked up any of the previous releases, so this is pretty tempting...

Handsome packaging even though it looks like it has the POV from inside an outhouse looking up. Nothing new as far as the transfers so this is just for folks who absolutely need every edition and, of course, UK folk. Had this included Part III, then we would've had a deal.

Most unfortunate cover, dare I say ugly, but might be an upgrade from the Shout

I have yet to buy this set from Shout! and now I'm kind of glad I did. Getting each movie in their own case is better than what Shout did.

Never heard of 101 films before though. Are they any good? Can I buy this from Amazon UK?

Did anyone receive this from HMV today?

I'd forgotten today was the release date but my pre-order from HMV hasn't shipped and it's now showing out of stock on their site.

I'm in the same boat with my HMV order of the North by Northwest UCE. Pre-ordered it, but it never shipped and now it's showing as sold out. Maybe they didn't have enough stock to meet demand.

Rarewaves shipped my copy last week. HMV seems to cause you yet another delay. Very unfortunate!

Got mine today and it’s a great set but only if you don’t need the BDs as they’re sourced from older masters that don’t nearly look as good as the 4K restorations.
The cover mentions 1.78:1 AR for all discs but that only applies to the BDs. The 4Ks are in 1.85:1 as it should be.

4K encoding is very beautiful and probably even flawless. They used 2x BD-66 for the films compared to Shout’s one BD-100 but these are only 75-minutes long and Shout surely didn’t have any issues encoding-wise (none that I remember).

The two films come in a Scanavo case each and are housed in a thick slip box together with a booklet.

I’ve also slept on Shout’s Alligator and The Sword and the Sorcerer and will get 101’s editions at the next best opportunity.

if you want an exact copy - PQ wise - of Shout's Alligator you may refer to carlotta release. it's a direct port (same encoding and all), but without english subs.
