United Kingdom Riki-Oh - Story of Riki April 2015 release

There's a listing for a UK release of this classic of splatter-fu:

Any idea if this will be the same shameful upscale that the US release was or if this might actually be a true HD transfer? I have the US release but would upgrade in a heartbeat.

Wow that's cheap and with very good artwork. Any more details about the company or the release?

Its being released by a company called MediumRare who i think have released stuff before like Armour Of God 2 Operation Condor which was uncut and i think True HD. Why do Amazon not change the listing details for films...it says PAL format and the language as Japanese!

The release date has changed to June 8th, Armour of God 2 was an upscale I believe.

Because if they researched all of their items, they'd never get anything done. Anyway, I was under the impression the manufacturer was responsible for the listing, and the general public could report changes that should be made...

The manufacturer is not responsible for saying that BDs are in PAL format - that seems to be a legacy of Amazon shoehorning BDs into a template originally designed for DVDs.

I didn't mean the PAL bit, which looks like it was chosen from a list of preset options, the same with the Region B/2 bit. But based on comments certain indie distributors made, I was under the impression was that they set the rest of the information initially, and then it could subsequently be changed by everyone else using the "Update Project Link".

Ive pre-ordered. That might change when more details come out. It can't be as bad as the last release.

Operation Condor was an upscale and there's no reason to believe Story of Ricky won't also be one. Medium Rare are a crappy little company putting out whatever Fortune Star gives them. This is the same company who put out a 1080i release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Riki-Oh is a part of a recent acquisition by Mediumrare of several Hong Kong martial arts films. Not all of the films will come from HD sources it seems. I hope Riki-Oh will be restored in HD.

Quote:
Mediumrare Entertainment is delighted to announce the acquisation of some of Hong Kong's finest martial arts films to be released through 2015. Plans are still to be ironed out but most of the titles will be restored in high definition from original 35mm masters and will be available in Bluray and limited edition steelbook, these movies will never have looked so good! Some highlights from the newly acquired titles are, Fist of Fury, Game of Death, The Way of the Dragon, The Big Boss, When Taekwondo Strikes, Armour of God, and the infamous Riki-Oh- The Story of Ricky

Maybe Mediumrare released the cheapo Operation Condor disc to test the market before going all in? Maybe Fortune Star have finally pulled their head out of their ass, and are doing new HD transfers of their catalouge? The cover artwork alone, compared to the awful OC cover gives me hope that some effort is being put into this. It would be very strange of them to mention new restorations and then use the decade old upscaled crap. I'm cautiously optimistic about these releases.

I share Markgway's skepticism over this release and I've been in the game long enough to need something a little more substantial than inspired, half-decent cover art to make me exciting about the prospect of a quality presentation. I, too, will believe it when I see it, but I certainly would love to see it.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still worried that it will be the same old transfer (though, at this point, I'll settle for decent subs and original mono). I just don't think they would make a big song and dance about a new restoration unless there was one. The big worry is that they said "most of them" will be restored, which could mean that some of them aren't. Of course, the Bruce Lee movies already were restored, so they could just be referring to that. Hoping for the best though.

I sent Medium Rare a detailed e-mail about a month ago and SURPRISE! they never got back to me. If they had ANY good news I'm sure they would have. Distributors love nothing more than blowing their own trumpets.

Never heard of these folks, but I'll be curiously optimistic.
I'd love a new transfer, but like everyone else, i'll wait until the reviews come in.
That all said, that cover does look rather tasty.
