This is likely to be censored due to the BBFC's damn fool regulations on animal cruelty (its always been cut by 28 seconds in the UK). Deep Red is also listed for UK blu release and I'm pretty sure that'll be cut for the same reason.

Inferno is cut because the mouse being chewed on would have been offered or made available to the cat. Meanwhile the BBFC deemed that a man eating a live octopus in Oldboy was actually perfectly acceptable. Hmmm.

btw Inferno on a UK bd, if it's not uncut, don't even bother releasing. Waste of everybody's time. Same goes for Deep Red. Stupid to even contemplate releasing HD versions of those two films in the UK.

I might buy it cheap as a tide-me-over until a proper uncut version is released. But I am not impressed, it was almost certain that Inferno would still be censored by the BBFC, and I feel that Arrow should have used common sense and chosen another film by the director. Opera perhaps??

You have to look at what is financially viable though. it's possible that another Inferno BD is in the works from another country which gives them access to HD master to work from without the potentially suicidal move of paying for one from scratch on such a niche title. That might well have not been the case with the others. There has to be a good reason for Inferno coming to BD and Deep Red not. People have been buying cut DVD's in the UK for years so hopefully it will still do well for them. I'll still support the work Arrow are doing and it looks like it'll be a spectacular package extras-wise.

The Oldboy octopus scene would have been a cultural insult if it had been cut.

A cultural insult? Do Korean people really eat live octopus like that?

Edit: Holy crap, did a search and folks really do. I thought it was just oldboy himself. Not so sure if cultural respect was the reason for the BBFC decision, I'm sure many countries find dog fights and chicken fights culturally acceptable but the BBFC certainly wouldn't.

It's probably a combination of cultural consideration and that it's an invertebrate, which is now definitely not covered under the Animal Welfare Act, although that didn't come into force until after the dvd release. Still, it was probably becoming a grey area at that point.

Here's an example of how far things have come, and it's a PG! Probably would have been completely chopped out in the Furman days.

I'll have ketchup with mine...

The cat & mouse scene is hardly a deal breaker for me. Definitely buying this.

Deep Red IS (supposedly) coming to BD...according to this thread here on the UK board, about six posts down Play.com shows tentative release dates for Bird With the Crystal Plummage, Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebre, and Phenomena, presumably from the same distributor (Arrow I believe)

Edit: But according to this comment in the thread djvaso linked to above, some of these may be dvd only...bummer. Blob, if that's what you were referring to, sorry

Unfortunately Almar confirmed Deep Red wasn't going to be Blu later in that thread.

Was thinking about that when I learnt that Camera Obscura are releasing an uncut blu ray in Germany, also during August. I'll pick up that uncut release, which is reported to also come with an 80 min documentary on the making of Inferno (presented on a seperate dvd).

Believe me, the BBFC would dearly love not to have to do this - I once had to liaise with them over a potentially problematic scene, and their relief when the producer could prove that the animal cruelty was faked was entirely genuine.
Michael, the "1937 Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act" only applies to films intended for screening in public cinemas. It does not cover video works intended for home viewing.

Rather inexpicably, however, the BBFC have simply chosen to apply the above legislation to home video works, even when they are under no legal obligation to do so.

The BBFC freely admit to this bizarre policy btw; in the section titled "Legal Considerations", on page seven of their classification guidebook (page nine of the pdf document), you can read the following :

"The Cinematograph Films
(Animals) Act 1937
It is illegal to show any scene
‘organised or directed’ for the
purposes of the film that involves
actual cruelty to animals. This Act
applies to the exhibition of films
in public cinemas but the BBFC also
applies the same test to video works.
For the purposes of this legislation
and The Animal Welfare Act 2006, only
vertebrates which are domesticated
or otherwise under the control of man are defined as ‘animals’."

So yes, please do feel free to blame the BBFC (and the BBFC alone) for all those "home video works" they've needlessly butchered over the last two and a half decades.

Total result

Just shows how far the BBFC have moved on in recent times...over zealous censorship never works.
