Quote:
SYNOPSIS
Touch of Evil begins with one of the most brilliant sequences in the history of cinema; and ends with one of the most brilliant final scenes ever committed to celluloid. In between unfurls a picture whose moral, sexual, racial, and aesthetic attitudes remain so radical as to cross borders established not only in 1958, but in the present age also.

Charlton Heston portrays Mike Vargas, the Mexican chief of narcotics who sets out to uncover the facts surrounding a car bomb that has killed a wealthy American businessman on the US side of the border. As Vargas investigates, his newly-wed wife Susie (Janet Leigh, two years before Hitchcock’s Psycho) is kidnapped by a gang out to exact vengeance for the prosecution of the brother of their leader (Akim Tamiroff). Meanwhile, Vargas’ enquiries become progressively more obfuscated by the American cop Hank Quinlan (played by Welles himself, in one of the most imposing and unforgettable screen performances of his career), a besotted incarnation of corruption who alternately conspires with Susie’s captors and seeks solace in the brothel of the Gypsy madame (Marlene Dietrich) who comforted him in bygone times.

Welles’ final studio-system picture has at last become secure in its status as one of the greatest films ever made. It remains a testament to the genius of Welles –– a film of Shakespearean richness, inexhaustible. The Masters of Cinema Series is extremely proud to present Touch of Evil in its UK debut on Ultra HD Blu-ray.

we will see if Eureka manages to do a better job than Kino on the transfers as the Kino version is already great, but this looks like it has better packaging and more special features.

If FiM and Dave M worked on this one then it will be better.

I'll be happy if he can replicate the Kino on 2 discs instead of 3.

I believe Fidelity in Motion has encoded Eureka's two previous 4K releases, so good chance they're working on this one too.

Up for pre-order at Diabolik: https://diabolikdvd.com/product/touc...-uhd-preorder/

It's actually cheaper than ordering directly from Eureka

The Kino release is 3 UHD BD-100's. Do we know for sure yet whether Eureka's 2 UHD's will even both be BD-100's?

I like the packaging and the book far better, but only 2 discs sounds like it could be a possible downgrade. Could FiM actually make that work?

Yeah, with seamless branching for the two cuts that are most similar to each other. And another linear disc for the one that has the most differences.

We've done quite a bit of work on advanced authoring techniques that identify repeated parts and, crucially, verify that no legitimate differences get lost in the shuffle (and that the entire recombined presentation plays correctly). After all that, repeating the entire film on a second disc, for the sake of some different scenes, becomes unnecessary.

The result - in theory, anyway - is savings on not replicating extra 100gb discs that can instead go towards more releases.

Ha! My credit card being difficult with World Pay and stopping me from ordering from Eureka direct worked out for me!

Touch of Evil is in my top 5 favourite noirs. Hell, it would probably make my top 3.

I will VERY likely be picking this up.

That's excellent news David, thank you very much for the explanation. Pre-ordered!

Same with me Matt, it's a stellar noir. I certainly like the packaging/book far more than the Kino release.

I re-watched this a few weeks ago. I'd forgotten how unremittingly bleak the film is, I mean hard boiled doesn't begin to describe its brutal visual locution and blunt, severe narrative edges. Two thirds of the way through, and it really feels like we're in some version of hell. And it's all so thrilling!

That's twice I've seen it, and twice it's knocked me for six. Really excited about this 4K release.

My big problem with KL is that they released this film as Scratch of Evil. I bought three different copies and all of them had scratched up discs. I eventually gave up trying to get a playable collection. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to this Eureka release!

You just ain't whistling Dixie about the scratches on the Kino release. I forget how many returns I had to make to get a scratch-free set, but it was a lot!
