Lightbulb Streaming Movies: Bit Rates Master Thread (ATV + iTunes/MA/Disney+)

To activate developer HUD on ATV, you need either a Mac with MacOS or a Windows PC running MacOS inside Oracle VirtualBox.

Ensure Xcode version is compatible with TV OS version. For instance, TV OS 14.5 (latest) may not be compatible with latest Xcode release version. Workaround is to download and install XCode Release Candidate on your MacOS and pairing both ATV box and Xcode on your MacOS.

Non-ATV devices like FireTV stick comes with Developer Tools app which can be installed and configured to bring the HUD on without having to go through all the Xcode hoops mentioned above.

However, Apple have capped the bit rates on non-ATV devices which means you are most likely getting 10-17 Mbps as opposed to 15-31 Mbps. For most folks these are just numbers but for the informed ones, this means a slightly noticeable drop in picture quality and more compression related artifacts. So stick to your ATV boxes for the best quality until Apple lifts the cap on bit rates.

Great spin-off from the Best Provider thread!

Some thoughts: perhaps include in OP the equipment and software used. Also, from what I understand, shouldn't the average bit-rate be a single figure, not a range? Granted I only have experience with this seeing Samlop10s analyses in the Best Provider thread...

Thanks mate for the feedback. Update the OP with some preface comments.

The legend says Avg-Peak (15-25 Mbps). This means avg bit rate is 15 Mbps and peak is 25 Mbps.

No worries, lead the way my friend!

Wow, does that mean then that the average bit rate for V for Vendetta in iTunes is 15mbps? I wonder why so low...

There is no pattern. Both V and Birds of Prey have the same low bit rates but on MA they are 10 Mbps higher.

When the streams have the same spec, MA certainly looks better. I can easily see more film grain on MA over iTunes. Not like night and day but its noticeable to my eyes and due to this, it makes close ups and textures look a bit sharper.

I wonder if it's a Warner Bros. thing, as they are both WB films, while the analyses that Samlop10 has done on Sony/Disney show iTunes edging it out.

On the flip side, Bad Boys For Life (Sony) iTunes is 15-24 Mbps whereas its 24-31 Mbps on MA. So there is no pattern.

Call of the Wild (Fox) iTunes (DV/DA) is 15-24 Mbps whereas its HDR10/DA counterpart on MA is 24-31 Mbps.

Just want to chime in and say thanks for all your work here. Super informative.

I was sticking with my built in LG TV app for my Apple TV viewing, but I think I'm going to grab an Apple TV soon instead. Probably when they announce a new one.

@Fiffy/@Igans316 - I’m intrigued by these differing avg. bit-rate numbers you have for Tenet and identifying what may be causing the differences. From what I understand, there are too many factors to know for certain, but I’d like to draw some likely conclusions if possible.

Fiffy, I don’t currently have any facility to check bit-rates myself. Could you perhaps check some of the bit-rates for other films that Igans316 has analysed, e.g. the Middle Earth extended films in iTunes please. It would be interesting to compare your results with Igans316 from his analysis a short while ago.

Appreciate both of your efforts, I understand it can be a ballache setting up the equipment, so thanks again to Fiffy and Igans316.
