United Kingdom Ridley Scott: Building Cinematic Worlds | BFI Retrospective

Quote:
The British Film Institute (BFI) has unveiled its full programme for September and early October 2025 at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX. Leading the season is a major retrospective titled RIDLEY SCOTT: BUILDING CINEMATIC WORLDS, dedicated to one of the most influential directors in modern cinema.

The season offers a rare opportunity to explore Ridley Scott’s enduring impact on film, television, and advertising. His visionary storytelling has spanned over 60 years, from large-scale epics to intimate dramas. The programme features screenings of his most iconic films, exclusive talks, and a free exhibition that dives deep into his creative archive.

Curated with selections by the director himself, this retrospective honours Scott’s exceptional contributions to visual storytelling. It will showcase a diverse range of his work, from BLADE RUNNER (1982) to THE MARTIAN (2015).

The season begins with RIDLEY SCOTT IN CONVERSATION on 5 October at BFI Southbank, where the director will discuss his creative journey. On 4 October, he will also participate in a Q&A following a screening of his debut feature, THE DUELLISTS (1977).

The same evening, Scott will introduce BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT at BFI IMAX, offering insights into one of his most iconic science fiction works. On 5 October, he returns to introduce THELMA AND LOUISE (1991), celebrating the landmark road film that redefined the genre.

A free exhibition titled RIDLEY SCOTT: BUILDING CINEMATIC WORLDS will run from 1 September to 5 October at BFI Southbank. This immersive display invites visitors to explore the visual artistry behind Scott’s films.

Items on display will include storyboards, film posters, clapperboards, and unique artifacts from key productions. The exhibit provides an intimate look into Scott’s creative process, from concept art to final frame.

The season includes several special events exploring Scott’s wider impact on short film, advertising, and music video production. These events will highlight the work of Ridley Scott Associates (RSA) and its innovative storytelling across formats.

On 4 September, RIDLEY SCOTT ASSOCIATES: SHORT FILM SHOWCASE will feature new and classic short films. Hosted by RSA Head of Short Film Nancy Ryan, the event will include a discussion with directors and producers.

BEHIND THE VISION: CRAFTING RIDLEY SCOTT’S WORLDS, on 23 September, will feature an illustrated discussion with key collaborators. Audiences will gain rare behind-the-scenes access to how Scott’s worlds come to life.

On 22 September, STORYTELLING IN COMMERCIAL will examine how RSA has shaped the future of advertising and branded content through cinematic craft.

BEYOND THE TRAILER, on 30 September, will feature RSA CEO Luke Scott. He will discuss how campaigns for films like PROMETHEUS and THE MARTIAN transformed modern movie marketing.

The season continues with BLACK DOG FILMS SPECIAL: MUSIC VIDEO SHOWCASE on 11 September. This event celebrates the collective’s bold visuals and revolutionary videos for artists such as Madonna, Aphex Twin, and Beyoncé.
