This is a surreal horror film about a young couple (Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg) who go out to a suburban housing development to shop for a home and find that they are trapped there. They are alone in an endless labyrinth-like suburb made up of identical green houses (that look like Monopoly houses) until they are presented with a baby and instructed to raise him.
I liked this film. It manages to stay engaging by handling its escalation well. I think Eisenberg was miscast. Somebody a little more intense and masculine would've been a better fit for the role. And his acting chops aren't quite up the later scenes when he's losing his grip and reaching the breaking point in his despair. The obvious commentary about the boredom of being trapped in suburbia isn't overplayed. The film never gets preachy. It keeps its focus more on the creepiness than hammering any message. A neat little film. |

I liked the film, but it's so damn weird. And this is coming from someone who loves The Lighthouse and mother! My first impression was, okay, clearly this is a multi-layered metaphor for something. Yes, the main theme is about being trapped, but I also think it's about the stress of raising a child.
I still recommend the film, though. But be prepared to be mind****'d. |

I thought it was awful, but the fact it was about the pressures of beginning a nuclear family, domestic trauma and the entrapment of a toxic home life were all fairly on the nose as long as you don’t get trapped in taking the whole film literally.
Here’s the original thread for the film btw - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=327811 |

An interesting Twilight Zone type of film where the viewer must have patience, as the mystery slowly unwinds in the film. It's interesting as clearly the two are being experimented on by some surreal horror realm that they're stuck in. I like it so far. Probably not a film accessible for all.
It reminds me of an episode of Outer Limits (newer series) where the 5 high school students suddenly are all alone in the high school hall, and an alien with great power tells them either they pick one to die or they all die, kind of experiment and 5 hours to figure it out. In Vivarium, the premise is the couple, Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, Need for Speed) follow a strange Real Estate agent to a carbon copy houses suburb, and then when he leaves before they get back to their car, they're trapped in an endless trap of identical houses. Strange things start happening. Clever movie. It can be symbolic at times, like the theme of digging your own grave with one's actions. Also reminds me of the Truman Show with Jim Carrey. The movie seems to make fun of the waking horror of being trapped in a day to day routine stuck in society to some degree. Where you have to find the entertainment value of repeating pretty much the same thing every week for a long time. This was great for surreal horror in the theme of Twilight Zone with a moral. For those who ever felt like a number in the system, just repeating the same routine over and over to a grim end. Where you need to find the joy in it before you perish by the end. Very good surreal horror movie IMO. This was free to watch on [Show spoiler]
