I assume they'll keep selling HD-DVD movies until the numbers dictate it isn't worth it to waste the shelf space. But say Best Buy and Circuit City have thousands of DUD units in a warehouse, what happens with those? Anyone know if those companies are basically selling the product on consignment or have they simply purchased for inventory? Also, does any insider have knowledge as to how large those inventories might be? Would they return these units to Toshiba or be forced to sell them "as is"? If so, how low will that price go?

Hardware: Probably be sold as upscaling DVD players (this has been happening). The any remaining stocks will be sent off to specialist recovery centres and all valuable parts recycled. The blue lasers in the HD-DVD players may even end in a brand new Blu-ray player
![]() Software: Stocks on shelves will eventually be depleted or withdrawn. Eventually some will be retained as special order items for the fanboys. The rest will be trashed (recycled for the polycarbonate), and written off against tax. |

I've heard they're pretty good upscalers.

No known hack for region unlocking though. Have you looked at any of the Oppo players? They upscale great and play everything from everywhere. |

I have been thinking about picking up a good upscaler for my HT room. I'm currently using a panny BD-30 for my blu's but unfortunately it doesn't upscale all that well. Once the dud players hit the firesale price points I figure it might be a good idea to grab one strictly for use as an upscaler. Or would I still be better off going with an Oppo, or maybe a Denon, what do you guys think? |

My very subjective and anecdotal experience is that my A20 is a better upscaler than my BDS1. How it would compare directly against other BD players I could not speculate. However, I suspect that there are affordable upconverting DVD players dedicated to this purpose that are better.

Because you compared them directly with other players or because you read it somewhere? If you look at my sig, I have a >$1k scaler in my HT setup. Is the DB30 better than it? No, (and I doubt any toshiba model will also) but it isn't bad. With film based movies, it does quite well thank you. |
