Hey,
Just a question, when I was really into DVD collecting Faroudja / Genesis deinterlacing was the gold standard, my question is this tech still active has it been licenced to other manufacturers, or has it all now been superceded? |

Faroudja was a oldie , made my SD 42" zenith (made by LG ) look HD , all the other upscales after were much better . qdeo, darbee,HQV, Anchor bay ... etc.. but still good .

Not that I am aware, but they have been far surpassed by Lumagen and madVR.

Faroudja deinterlacing was top-tier back in the DVD days, but it's been surpassed by newer tech. It's not as common now, with modern players and TVs using more advanced processing methods.

Faroudja was notorious for really bad macroblocking for eagle-eyed viewers with certain displays. I could not tolerate it on mine.

Enjoy seeing these posts about older tech. I remember thinking the DCDi was amazing with DLP for watching Lasers. It might just be rose tinted glasses, but I recall that combo being the best I've seen for the format. Likely nowhere on the level as say something crazy like a top of the line CRT projector, but it's nice to see ways to make LD really fun. For anyone with tons of money and tech expertise and a strong back, dual CRT with an X0 LD player would be an absolute dream for that old format. But I did keep one of my twenty year old or so protectors with DCDi. Unfortunately it's been idle for probably nearly a decade and so it might need a new bulb and cleaning.

Faroudja/DCDi basically became irrelevant once HD became a thing and we had native progressive frames and improved deinterlacing technologies like Silicon Image’s processing. Display manufacturers also improved the their deinterlacing algorithms as well.
Faroudja was state of the art back in the laserdisc era and early DVD era but once HD formats took hold with native progressive frames encoded on most every disc the need for advanced deinterlacing technologies subsided. I think the last product I had that had a version of Faroudja Video processing was a 2010 Onkyo TX-NR1007. That implementation of it though had a bug where it was locked into 24fps instead of the cadence of real world content of 23.98fps which resulted in the AVR dropping a frame every 43s in 1080p24 video. Only way to get around it was to disable the VP which removed on screen display functions. I moved on to a TX-NR3008 after about a year that used a Silicon Image based VP chipset that did not have the 24p bug. Last edited by Tok; 10-16-2024 at 07:55 PM. |
