A sequel to Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is in the early stages of development at Legendary as the studio is looking to move forward with a cinematic world for the Pokémon franchise. As the production of Detective Pikachu progressed, The Pokémon Company became more open to the idea of trademark props and characters being used in cinematic fashion, prompting ideas for a larger world to unfold on the big screen. A release date for the Detective Pikachu sequel has not yet been revealed.

Detective Pikachu was a critical and box office success in its opening weekend, though the unprecedented success of Avengers: Endgame may have taken a bit of wind out of the Pokémon movie's sails. Pikachu's first outing, starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular Pokémon and Justice Smith as the human counterpart, hauled in $54 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. To date, it has topped $175 million worldwide.

It was. There was an article about a month and a half ago that if DP proved to be a hit, legendary was going to fast track a sequel and a Red/Blue/Yellow adaptation to the big screen, the latter being the bigger undertaking.

[Show spoiler]They need Reynolds for the schtick to work, and I can't imagine how they come up with a scenario he'll have/want to go in Pikachu plus he'll know that it's him and that's kinda weird. Maybe some freak accident? They gotta get real creative and sophisticated with this one cause they set the bar pretty high in my book with that Reynolds in Pikachu twist.

Could be a vice versa type thing.

[Show spoiler]Over time, Human Reynolds slowly becomes Pikachu in a Human body, and Pikachu slowly gets Ryan's voice again. How that activates could be one of several reasons. It could be that going into a new investigation they find an artifact or encounter another pokemon that switches them again. Or they could bring in a legendary pokemon that uses time travel to go back to the events of Detective Pikachu and go on a detour adventure with Reynolds' Pikachu.
