Default Resurrected (1989) - Paul Greengrass - Twilight Time

I got this BD yesterday and saw there's no thread for it here, though there is a review.

It's an excellent early film from Paul Greengrass, his first theatrical release, about a soldier in the Falklands War who returns to the UK after having become separated form his unit, only to be labelled a deserter. Interestingly, Greengrass would do a TV film a few years later called "The One that Got Away", about a soldier in the Gulf War who also gets separated from his unit. That film is available in the US on DVD.

The BD from Twilight Time looks great, especially considering it's an obscure 1989 British film. The transfer is flawless, though there's no grain at all, so I don't know if perhaps it saw some DNR work or something.

I can't compare it to the US DVD, available through Amazon exclusively. However I own the British DVD, and the BD transfer is 1000x better. Aside from the PAL-speedup of the UK DVD, it's dark, murky and the colors are washed out.

The BD also includes the two retrospective interviews, each about 15 mins long, with Greengrass and star David Thewlis, which appear on the UK DVD.

I've posted a few caps to compare to the BD caps here:

I know I'm late, but thank you James Luckard for those screencaps. It makes me so happy to have gotten this BD!

In case anyone else is like me, and always wondered how the old Twilight Time disc compared to the newer Indicator disc, I broke down and bought the Indicator disc in order to compare them.

Bonus Features:

Twilight Time
Paul Greengrass interview - 17:46 (PAL to NTSC conversion, shows artifacts)
David Thewlis interview - 15:56 (PAL to NTSC conversion, shows artifacts)
Isolated score

Indicator
Paul Greengrass interview - 18:30 (PAL master slowed down in order to run 1080p)
David Thewlis interview - 16:39 (PAL master slowed down in order to run 1080p)
New Rita Tushingham interview - 4:46
Theatrical trailer - 2:36 - 4:3, I can't tell if it's open matte or cropped

I'm sure the interviews run at their native speed on the TT disc because they ran the same length on the PAL DVD.

As for the film, the file size is bigger on the TT disc:
Twilight Time - 28.2 gb
Indicator - 21.6 gb

The Indicator runs 6 seconds longer. I have no idea why, they start with the same logos and appear to be the same transfer.

The TT is 1.78, while the Indicator is 1.85, matted.

Here are a couple of caps:

Twilight Time

Indicator

Twilight Time

Indicator

For this final cap, I looked for a shot with dim lighting and subtle gradations in tone, where poor compression would be most pronounced. Honestly, they still look almost identical, though the TT does have ever so slightly superior compression.

Twilight Time

Indicator

I watched it today for the first time, and boy what a great film! Subtle but smart direction from Greengrass and great performances, especially Thewlis'.

I was quite surprised though to see how few online ratings it has, and how mixed some of those are. Reading things like "boring" and "no engaging characters" makes you wonder if some people are really human.

It truly deserves some recognition and re-evaluation. Unfortunately even the Indicator release didn't quite achieve in putting the film back under people's radars.

There really should be more films about the Falklands/Las Malvinas “skirmish”, the impact of which continues to reverberate throughout Britain and Argentina over 40 years later
