Default Twilight of the Dead (George A. Romero's Final Zombie Film)

Quote:
In 1968, filmmaker George A. Romero unleashed the zombie genre with Night of the Living Dead, a low-budget sensation that remains as relevant today as it was decades ago. The filmmaker went on to direct five more zombie features, including Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985) and Land of the Dead (2005). What few knew was that before he died of lung cancer at 77 in 2017, Romero was quietly developing Twilight of the Dead, a concluding chapter intended to be his final statement on the genre.

Now Suzanne Romero, widow of the filmmaker, is opening up about Twilight of the Dead and sharing her plans to take it to the screen. She has been developing the script with three screenwriters for the past few years and is ready to meet with directors on the project, which has this tantalizing logline: "The story is set in a decimated world. Life has all but disappeared. But there still may be hope for humanity."

George A. Romero wrote a treatment for Twilight of the Dead with Paolo Zelati. After the director's death, Zelati asked Suzanne Romero for permission to continue with the script. He brought on screenwriters Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas to help.

"I gave him my full blessing as long as I could be there every step of the way for it to remain true to George’s vision," says Suzanne Romero. "We had a solid treatment and the beginning of the script. I can 100 percent say that George would be incredibly happy to see this continue. He wanted this to be his final stamp on the zombie genre."

Wouldn't happen but it would be great if they could get Guillermo del Toro to direct.

Frank Darabont would be a good choice. Someone who's not too stylish in his own way where it could overshadow Romero's style, but still a solid director in his own right who has proven himself with the zombie genre (The Walking Dead) and may be able to translate Romero's vision without embellishing it.

I know that probably wouldn't happen, and Frank would probably want to rewrite it, but the idea of that type of collaboration would draw a lot of attention.

Is Michael Gornick still around? He would be a perfect choice.

He hasn't done anything in forever, though. His last directing credit was in 1991, and his last producing credit was in 1995.

But he worked with Romero a LOT, as DP on "Martin", "Dawn of the Dead", "Knightriders", "Creepshow", and "Day of the Dead", and then he directed, "Creepshow 2". He also directed a number of episodes of "Tales from the Darkside".

Tom Savini would be a good choice, too.

I feel like someone who actually knew and worked a lot with George should do it.

Maybe give some up and comer a shot. Like Ryan Spindell? Mortuary Collection was quite an achievement for a small budgeted film.

He is. Gornick just worked on the Dawn of the Dead remaster.

Imagine doing it then with his wife/estate's endorsement, with Gornick directing Romero's script (a la "Creepshow 2"), Savini involved doing practical effects, and whoever else is still around from that camp being involved. People that actually knew George's working methods and desires.

I'd really rather that than bring in some big name modern people who will just make it something else entirely.

By the way, for those that don't know, yet, Shudder picked up that long lost Romero short, "The Amusement Park", and will have it on Shudder this summer.

So this line from Uwe Boll's House of the Dead was prophetic after all?:

If so, then that's one more thing Uwe Boll got wrong.

Just found out about this. They really should consider changing the name if this ever becomes a reality. It will be poked fun of like crazy because of the Twilight name in it. For those that don't know, it pretty much sounds like a zombie parody of Twilight right off the bat.

Last Twilight movie was almost a decade ago.

And Savini working with KNB for effects. I know Tom's hands aren't doing great, but I think it would be killer if he at least consulted.

I'm interested for sure. It saddens me that GAR didn't get a chance to do this one but I'm sure those all involved will honour as best as they can.

I think Johannes Roberts could probably do a decent job emulating Romero's style.

Just what we need, more nobodies capitalizing off Romero's own work with crappy remakes and sequels to classics.

I am a huge Romero fan and I personally don't think this is a good idea.
The original trilogy is excellent, didn't need anymore. Land came out, and it was OK, but not nearly up to the level of the first three. Diary and Survival are just bad films.

I think the zombie genre is done, personally. Shaun of the Dead was probably the last great zombie film, and fitting as it's a tribute to George's trilogy. So many shows and movies tried too hard to capitalize on the success of the Dawn Remake, and rarely found their mark.

Obviously these are just my personal opinions, but I just don't see it as a Romero film if he isn't directly involved. I'd obviously still give it a chance, but I just don't see it working.
