Disney Elio (2025) [No 3D Blu-ray]

I didn’t see a 3D thread for this.

They did make a few original films with interesting ideas, and people didn’t go for those. Right now people only seek to respond to sequels and prequels and other kinds of existing IP.

We’ll see whether this is an exception to the norm.

I think the moviegoing experience is now so twisted. Most movies go to streaming a week after their theatrical release, so why go to the movies at that point? The same crowd that apparently wants more original films would rather stream or pirate it anyway. Not to mention when a really good and original film comes out, no one knows about it due to the distributor’s terrible job marketing the film.

Elio looks like another victim of bad marketing, as most people don’t even know this movie exists. Also, its trailers imo don’t do the movie any favors as it makes it look unwatchable.

Elio looks like an original story to me. I’m expecting it to be the best 3D animated film of 2025. Why are we complaining about this film instead of Smurfs, Bad Guys 2, Zootooia 2, Ne Zha 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, etc?

SOUL is the best Pixar film IMO. Best story, best visuals, best 3-D. An absolute shame it didn’t get a real full-fledged theatrical release or 3-D Blu-ray.

It looks as good as every other Pixar movie. It's a tragedy because when Pixar first went 3D I bought every film they released and enjoyed them all. I even went to the cinema to see Toy Story 3. But I don't rate Pixar's use of 3D enough to pay for it theatrically (maybe if I had kids I would take them) and now that the 3D versions are only available on AVP I wouldn't even pirate the 2D versions let alone buy them. Disney Pixar won't give me their product the way I want it so I won't give them my money any more.

The 3-D for Soul is markedly better than that of all other Pixar titles. Absolutely fantastic.

That is a good point. It's something newer instead of another remake or sequel. Dreamworks, looks like all they have planned are mostly more sequels... Pixar has been relying on sequels, along with Sony Animation, Disney, Dreamworks, etc.

The story is hopefully good although I think this will be a tough sell with audiences for a movie where a kid interacts with monsters on an alien world. Didn't they try something similar with Disney's Strange World and Pixar's Onward?

I think I never went to watch a Pixar's 3D movie at the cinema. Watched once the 3D trailer for cars 2 and that was it. Not even any of Cars trilogy I watched on the big screen.

I apologize for starting the thread in a critical and hypocritical manner. When I started the Toy Story 5 3D thread I could have easily complained that it’s another cashgrab sequel, but I didn’t at the time because I didn’t think of it then. I just wanted to share that it was getting a 3D release and that’s all, which is what I should have done here instead of complaining about an original film that hasn’t even come out yet.

If I had shared my opinion on an existing thread, different story. But I started this thread with (in hindsight) an overly negative take. You could argue it’s not that big of a deal. But out of courtesy, I do apologize for starting the thread with the intention to criticize the movie.

Interestingly, Disney apparently chose to show footage of this at Cinemacon in 3D! Hope that bodes well for the effort they’re putting into it

The 3D Trailer of Elio played before Minecraft Movie 3D today.
Medium 3D layers and volume, Elio looks good in 3D.

This movie is likely made for a toddler to kid audience with the main sidekick larvae worm character with the voice of a baby almost. Without any pre-existing video games or toys on the market for this, positive word of mouth and good reviews will be needed to do well in theaters for Pixar.

Pixar said their movies cost a lot more to produce because they keep everything sourced and made in the US, versus they said; Dreamworks' Animation Studio keeps their costs lower by exporting the animation work overseas. According to an article in recent years on budgets.

I'd say it was made primarily with the under-13 crowd in mind, but this being Pixar it will be entertaining enough for most grown-ups, too.

Hopefully. Pixar is usually good with buddy films. The Good Dinosaur, was that Pixar? It was a buddy film too, where by the end, there was an emotional attachment of the characters for the audience to connect with, effectively done I thought. The kid Brontosaurus and the Cavekid.
That 3D movie didn't do that well though in theaters, but I liked it.
Nice 3D too and probably Pixar's strongest 3D film that I've seen. Looks like they're past that phase of milder 3D films thankfully.

Saw a pop up ad (on IMDB) that says only in theaters and 3D. Meaning no 2D showings?
