I bought this last week, and was pleasantly surprised by the picture quality. It has nice grain and the picture is clean and stable.

I don't know much about the provenance of the film, but I noted that it had a new Studio Canal intro logo, which could perhaps suggest a new scan?

Anyway, I'd never seen the film, and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's more of a feel-good film than I was expecting, and has some funny moments along with the drama.

I purchased this recently as I was curious to revisit it having not seen it since its initial cinema release. I remember liking the film and in particular Diane Ladd & Robert Duvall's performances but recall be cool on Laura Dern's performance.

Second time around I liked the film even more and loved Laura Dern's performance. The transfer looked beautiful which a nice level of grain. Funny this was made the same year as Fried Green Tomatoes as both films are set around the same era and are set in small town America.

Interesting to read that the film ran into censorship problems in the UK and had about 20 seconds trimmed out of it. Watching the film through the lens of 2024 it's pretty easy to see what was cut out.

I own this on Amazon Video when it was drt cheap, and it sounds like the same Canal HD master is being used here.

On this edition, what is the "alternate ending" that it refers to?

You’ve got to be kidding. This is one of the worst, if not THE worst HD transfers I’ve ever seen. I returned it, it was so bad. Hoping the Kino Lorber release actually gets some attention, cuz that one will be going back if they are using the same print. Horrible, absolutely unwatchable.
