United Kingdom Murder Rock (Dancing Death) (4K UHD) 88 Films

Release: 23rd June, 2025
Order: Amazon.co.uk - 88 Films

Quote:
One of Lucio Fulci’s most over-looked movies, Murder Rock is a gem of giallo which has been polished and finally given the respectful release it deserves. The plot is pretty straight forward; a male model and the head of an acclaimed Dance Academy team up to try and solve the bloody murders of dancers, but both (as you may have expected) hide dark secrets. By relying on suspense rather than blood-splattered set-pieces, Murder Rock allows the viewer to be a voyeur on the deranged behaviour of a damaged mind. Now released for the first time in a brand new 4K Dolby Vision master by those psycho’s at 88 Films…

Now we need Conquest since the Scorpion is loaded with compression artifacts. Happy for this one as the BD was in the wrong AR.

Wow, is this really happening? Hats off to 88 Films for throwing down some mid-tier Fulci uhd! Mad respect for that. I'm in with my wallet. Hopefully it's a good sign and they'll announce more 4k Fulci soon.

Dunno what they have the rights to as regards 4K, but I'd get their version of The Devil's Honey or Manhattan Baby.

Quite a few solid titles begging a uhd release from that 1978-1988 era, where Fulci was still prolific, still focused, and usually pushing his disjointed fever-dream atmosphere, albeit with mixed results. Not Fulci's greatest hits, but decent, enjoyable catalog filler nonetheless.

I'd love to see 88 Films pick up 4k rights to any of his remaining mid-tier works from this era: The Black Cat, Manhattan Baby, Conquest, Aenigma, Zombi 3, etc. And, of course, there's his one-off mafia crime extravaganza, Contraband. BU put out a very nice blu ray for Manhattan Baby some years back, but any and all of these films are resting on increasingly-dated standard blu ray releases which leave plenty of room for improvement on the uhd platform.

That aside, I can't believe that A Lizard in a Woman's Skin still hasn't made it to uhd. It's an excellent film and potent giallo, all around. A stand-out in Fulci's catalog.

I feel he fell off after either Murder Rock or Devil’s Honey. Things got cheap and lazy looking after Murder Rock, but Devil’s Honey works because it’s small in scale.

I wonder if Arrow will pick up The Black Cat in 4k at some point. Since they rolled out the prior blu ray and have some serious familiarity with the film, they may be the most likely candidate to pump out a uhd eventually. No doubt it would probably be pretty low on their 4k priorities list. Great atmosphere, creepy and bleak, it feels at times like a Hammer film gone to the ugly side of things. And I'm a sucker for harpsichord in the scoring on anything with an even remotely gothic aesthetic.

Was this previously available from Orbit or Diabolik for preorder? Not there now, wondering if it is a VS thing now. I dislike the VS art immensely, even the ugly 88F artwork is better, sad to say. I was waiting for 88F to list the region status, but now seeing that VS's BD will be region free, gets me hopeful that both releases will be, like A Blade In The Dark was.

you can forget manhattan baby getting a blu-ray or 4K UHD release by 88films because that will still be with shameless unless just like the house on the edge of the park they no longer have the rights to it but that sounds unlikely

Vinegar Syndrome are also putting this out and claim they’ve done the transfer themselves? So will this be a different master?

Each to their own of course, but I happen to prefer it to the VS artwork, and being in the UK (which this release is primarily aimed at), it'll be cheaper than importing the US edition.

I ordered the VS 4k release as well (as usual). Looking forward to shooting the VS 4k release out against 88's 4k release. I'm gonna guess in advance and say that the VS will have a more saturated color palette with hotter skin tones, and the 88 release will have less saturation and a slightly better encode. Do leopards change their spots?
