You look at his career prior to this and he does tend to work in fits and starts, The Lobster, Sacred Deer and the Favourite all came out in less time that the break until Poor Things and now it looks like we might get another couple of films relatively quickly.

I imagine covid had something to do with the gap between The Favourite & Poor Things...

Maybe but you also had a long break after Dogtooth/Alps to The Lobster so it could be he tends to work on multiple stuff at once or at least gets into the flow of a certain kind of film for a few years.

It was probably harder to get financing and distribution earlier in his career. He's been working non-stop since The Lobster tho, which was his big break, he even made two shorts in the gap between The Favourite and Poor Things.

Emma Stone in talks to star

Emma Stone, who just won a BAFTA for her performance in “Poor Things” and is nominated for an Oscar, is in talks to reunite with Yorgos Lanthimos on his remake of South Korean fantasy comedy “Save the Green Planet.”

The project, which is expected to start shooting in the summer in the U.K. and New York, has been in the works for several years. Jang Joon-hwan, who directed the original South Korean movie, was previously attached to helm the English-language remake, based on a screenplay by Will Tracy, whose credits include HBO’s “Succession” and Searchlight’s “The Menu.”

Variety also speculates that she'd most likely play a supporting role, but I honestly hope she's the lead.

We don't really know what changes Yorgos is going to make to the original story, as I seriously doubt he'd be interested in telling it the exact same way. All the plot descriptions we've had so far are obviously taken from the Korean film.

COVID is the reason for the second gap. First gap is probably the search for financing.

Either way he's on a new tear. Hope his Jim Thompson adaptation is still a thing.

New synopsis from the THR article:

The script from Will Tracy follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

Seems like they changed the story slightly, from a businessman to a woman CEO, probably so Emma could play her. Also it's two men now instead of "a young man and his devoted girlfriend". Curious to see who they cast as the other guy.

-It should be really interesting if they didn't rewrite the CEO role (other than switch the gender). Could be looking at a major uproar.

-I wouldn't mind if they kept the original twist ending, I just hope the final message is less obvious.

A remake of a Korean genre film with big name actors and an "auteur" director.

I'm sure this will be good, not like a similar project happened before and it ended up a complete and utter embarrassment of a disaster fo-oh shit..

Kind of a weird outlook, Yorgos has a much better recent track record than Spike Lee had at the time of making Oldboy. Not to mention the quality gap between the two titles they're remaking, with one being one of the best movies of all time and the other a small hit that few people are aware of (it has less than 10k ratings on IMDb)

Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film to star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, will be released wide in the U.S. on Nov. 7, 2025, Focus Features said on Tuesday.

Universal Pictures will release Bugonia internationally, excluding Korea, where CJ ENM will handle the local release.
