![]() ![]() Voted as one of the most emotional movies ever made, I don't see how this classic and touching father/son film was never released on bluray yet. I remember my dad taking me to see this when it was first released, I was only 10 years old and we sat there, in the darkened theater and cried our eyes out together. This film has remained in my heart and my memory ever since then. I have it on VHS and even an HD digital copy from VUDU, but this film deserves to be released on bluray for other families to discover. I have never found a child actor who can top the performance that Ricky Schroder delivered in this amazing film. I'm so sorry that he didn't get better films as an adult, because his acting talent is so raw and powerful. Jon Voight and Fay Dunaway also deliver award-winning performances here, and when you mix all that talent, the stirring musical score and this tear-jerking story together....you end up with a film that will stick with you forever. I SERIOUSLY hope to see this movie released on bluray one day. Am I alone in this? |

Just watched The Champ for the first time on the DVD. Excellent film. Very sad/poignant, and realistic.
Jon Voight & Ricky Schroder really convinced me that they were actual father & son - though I know they aren't in real life. Excellent casting here. Even though the Voight character was a drunk & a gambler, it was obvious he really loved his son & had his best interest(s) at heart. The scene towards the beginning when he won a lot of money gambling & came back for gifts for all of his friends was great; RS's expression when he realized his father hadn't forgotten him was priceless - great acting here. In fact, "The Champ's" willing to go back into the ring (towards the end of the film) was primarily to make his son proud. I also liked the Florida setting re: the ocean/beach, horse racing, etc. [Show spoiler] This film is yet another example of why the '70's was the best decade for cinema. So, yes - I would definitely be onboard for an upgrade of The Champ to Blu - I'm sure it would look fantastic in HD. Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 02-13-2020 at 08:00 PM. |

One of the few Jon Voight films still not on Blu-Ray somehow we need this and Catch 22, and Rosewood too bad they're all owned by Warner Bros. However, if say Kino announces a Warner Bros deal next year as they're in talks with them then we might finally get these two from the deal at some point. Seriously though I hope Criterion puts out Rosewood at some point on Blu-Ray, or maybe even WAC could do it I just think these movies need to finally get Blu-Rays they've been waiting way too long for them.
