USA Incubus 4K UHD (1966) (Arrow Video)

Arrow will be releasing Incubus (1966) on 4K in January!

Note: The Full-Frame (1.37:1) version of the movie that's included as an HD bonus has burnt-in French subtitles. These subtitles also appear sparsely in the 4K widescreen (1.85:1) presentation, but for the most part are cropped out. Here is an image of the booklet where this is explained by Arrow, courtesy of member PowellPressburger.

Starting to see more 4ks made from theatrical prints. Curious how that'll go over.

I’ve seen this transfer and I’ll just say…keep your expectations in check. It looks fine but IMO a UHD is pretty hard to justify given the elements available.

I love the fact it's in 4k. The most filmic display of a 35mm print possible.

Did they actually find a print without burned in subtitles? I've got the old DVD that puts the English subs over the burnt in French subs.

NOTE the info given on the BURNT IN SUBTITLES

Incubus1.jpg

Also the Cover insert art is the same as the slipcover, but it does have a reversible slip with the same cover art, but the back cover info is, I'm guessing the films language. Interesting touch.

Can't wait to watch this one.

How does this compare to the LCQF? I just ordered that one prior to this being announced and I had not opened it. If it is the same or better, I might just pick this one up to replace the LCQF simply for the smaller form factor casing.

Probably comes down to who does the compression / encoding on the LCQF disc.

Unless FiM does the LCQF, I’m guessing the Arrow is the best option. I have a few older releases of theirs and they could give their films more disc space IMO

This is interesting

The matted widescreen version crops the majority of the burnt in subtitles.
The Bonus version in open matte full frame, the burnt in french subtitles are visible.

Personally I’d rather have the open matte in 4K or also in 4K!
Love the composition far better, especially the opening titles.

Note the film is only about 74 minutes long

They could have included both aspect ratios in 4K on a 100gb disc easily.
Missed opportunity, not sure why this wasn’t done. This alone makes the release less exciting.

Arrow should have mentioned the burned-in French subtitles with their list of extras/specs. It's also strange that they don't specify that it's only the full frame version seemingly affected by that, unless that's not fully confirmed yet?

In any event, I'll add a note about this to the first post.

Okay I finished watching the open matte version that is only in HD, and went back thru more scenes in the 4K matted widescreen version and the burnt french subtitles are seen here and there but very sparse.

I updated my previous post.

Im just scratching my head over Arrow not including both aspect ratios in 4K on a 100gb disc. Makes no sense

Couldn't some editing tool be used to fill in the burnt in subtitles?

They could do what some cut copy paste from before / after subtitle frames digitally but would be costly.

Maybe someone will attempt in the future.

It doesn’t bother me since you need english subtitles anyhow and they cover up most of the french ones for the Open Matte HD version.

Just got my copy from Barnes and Noble. Is there a print error on the case insert cover? I almost always like to flip the Arrow insert covers over for the original art to contrast with the slipcover, but this just has an identical print of the new artwork (mentioned by PowellPressburger above). That's a bummer for this one in particular.

Well it is kind of clever, they did the print for back cover in the language of the film Esperanto.

Kind of a bit of a wink for sure.

At first I was thinking this is odd it’s identical. Lol

Is there dialog missing around 38-39 mins ? I haven’t seen this movie in years but I picked it up based on my memory of seeing it on TCM, so no idea if it’s supposed to be that way or not.
