Germany Raise The Red Lantern

Coming Aug 19, 2013: Raise The Red Lantern (Germany)

But why would they release this without subtitles?

There was also the French edition - with only French subtitles : Raise The Red Lantern (France)

According to Amazon.de it will get german subtitles.

But they won't be the first company, if they won't put german subs with chinese audio. Constantin Filmes released Hero with Jet Li with German and original Audio, but no subtitles at all on DVD.

Interesting.

There's a chance ".srt" subtitles exist, but who knows if they'll sync properly...

This film, and all of Zhang Yimou's films, deserve 4k blus, so it's borderline criminal that there isn't a decent blu-ray release for Raise the Red Lantern. Also, To Live, Ju-Dou, The Road Home....how do these not have proper blu-ray releases with range of sub-titles for folks to watch? I understand the market may be a bit niche, but these are films by a master film-maker at his peak (imo). Very frustrating!

Raise the Red Lantern recently got a 4k restoration and was shown at at least one festival this year. I heard it was restored in part by Criterion.

Via Vision released (and then re-released) a very nice blu-ray set containing all of Zhang Yimou's films starring Gong Li. It was region free, had great subtitles, and a nice amount of bonus content.

Raise the Red Lantern was sourced from a fresh scan of the original camera negative and looks great.

It's a travesty that you can't even stream this in the US. I remember it being on Plex to stream a few years ago, but I've seen nothing since then. Criterion Collection should bring this out on 4KBD+BD. Maybe they will because I saw they did "Farewell My Concubine" awhile back. I am pretty sure all we can get in the US right now is the old DVD.
