Tormented by the murder of his family, the young, wary Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) eliminates his devious adoptive grandfather Tiberius (Peter O'Toole) and seizes control of the declining Roman Empire as it descends into a spiral of depravity, destruction and madness. Restoring the complete performances of McDowell and O'Toole along with fellow film legends Helen Mirren and John Gielgud, this extensive reconstruction of the notorious 1980 spectacle, based on the original narrative as conceived by writer Gore Vidal, had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Showcasing the sumptuous costume designs of two-time Oscar winner Danilo Donati (Fellini's Casanova; Romeo & Juliet), CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT features an entirely new score by Troy Sterling Nies as well as a new animated title sequence by graphic artist Dave McKean (Arkham Asylum, The Sandman).

Also included is the 1980 theatrically released version of CALIGULA, which was infamously transformed in post-production by its financier, Penthouse magazine founder Bob Guccione.

A long time ago, a video store was going out of business. So, I perused the shelves for the deeply discounted VHS tapes (which was mostly empty by that point), but they had CALIGULA. I was like "Woah. That's hard to find."

I got to the counter and had CALIGULA, DEEP THROAT, DEBBIE DOES DALLAS, and WESTWORLD.
(If they had BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR, I would have gotten that as well.)

Guy at the counter was like "Have fun."
I merely thought, "Huh. Never thought I'd get to see these classic titles. And WESTWORLD is great."
The other three movies I bought that day weren't great.

The Australian set will have three cuts of the film, though I expect the archival versions will be on Blu-ray. Thomas Negovan says a UHD of the 1979 cut is unlikely.
