"Where Sony had the killer edge is that its Playstation 3 (PS3) computer games console comes pre-fitted with a Blu-ray player. So as Sony has sold 10.5 million PS3 consoles since it was launched in late 2006, that is 10.5 million Blu-ray machines already in homes around the world, before you add sales of stand-alone Blu-ray players. By contrast, Toshiba has sold only one million HD DVD machines. " |

All I heard for the first year of the PS3's release is how the inclusion of blu-ray was a huge mistake and would cost Sony both the console war and format war. It's funny how much can change in a few months. Of course, the media frontrunners are now jumping back on the Sony/PS/BD bandwagon, but many of us were here all along. I don't want to say we told you so, but...

Totally!!! Most of that was coming from Microsoft tho, and we all know how they feel about SONY! Now we can laugh at the little Xbots that spent Ł350 on an Xbot, Ł200 on a HD-DVD add-on and now will need to spend another Ł200 on a blu-ray add-on!!! Minted! Makes Ł500 for a launch PS3 look like the bargin of the century!!! ![]() |

Yeah...even up to about a month ago people were still arguing with me about whether it was a good decision or not ti include the BD player. I told them that they had to admit it was a great idea and they were like "no...Sony is stupid...they stumbled out the gate and now they're in last place." People have no foresight. Sure the PS3 had a bad launch, but 2008 looks to be turning that around very quickly. The PS3 gave Blu-ray the edge to win the format war and now it's time for BD to give the PS3 the edge in the console war. Now that there is only one format people are wanting to buy and which player is the most recommended...The PS3! Sales are going to be extremely high from here on out until some of the standalones pull away from the PS3. I think we'll see more months with the PS3 ahead of the 360 and quite possibly ahead of the Wii.

It always goes like this. Everyone acts like they didn't say it was a mistake when it turns out to be a positive thing. So much for those market analysts

The inclusion of a Blu-ray player in the PS3 might have cost Sony some game console sale in the beginning but in the end and long term, it will help both Blu-ray and game console sales.

I've owned PS1 and PS2 because I thought they were the best consoles available and I still believe they were. With the inclusion of blu-ray in the PS3 I knew it would be the best console available again (come on, who designs a next-gen console with DVD, just stupid). And the damn thing is better than I could have imagined. Just for the fact that I can stream all of my music, movies, and pictures off of my computer is awesome. It's all very easy to do and the interface works great. I love being able to show the awesomeness of the PS3 to people who come over to my house (convinced 2 to buy one so far). Blu-ray and PS3 were destined for greatness from the start. Time to drink some Jack and Coke to celebrate their victory.

indeed, it is gaining momentum as we speak. It is also beneficial that the company is selling so many consoles now that it is no longer at a loss

Agreed. But they needed to get their crapbox in consumers hands before PS3 and Wii because they knew they had no chance otherwise. Therefore no Dud add-on and systems with a failure rate of 33% (in what... 2 years time, unacceptable).

The PS2 was also selling well (and still is) when the PS3 launched and that also helped offset some losses for Sony. Some people don't look at the bigger picture.
