Quote:
A baby is found between the boilers on the luxury liner "Virginian", which commutes from the old to the new world around the turn of the century. The sailors christen the foundling "Nineteen Hundred". All his life "Nineteen Hundred" will remain on the cruise ship. He makes friends, falls in love and has his heart broken, plus he becomes an amazing pianist - a living legend. He never leaves his steamer to set foot on the mainland. But one day "Nineteen Hundred" stands on the gangway to New York and has to make the decision of his life. (1 4K Ultra HD + 3 Blu-rays + 1 CD)

Oscar winner Giuseppe Tornatore (CINEMA PARADISO) created an overwhelmingly beautiful epic about the story of an extraordinary man. Tim Roth (PULP FICTION) breathed life into this character like no other, while Ennio Morricone (PLAY ME THE LIED VOM TOD) accompanied this masterpiece with one of the most beautiful melodies of his entire career.

Both new editions are outstanding! These are two slip-boxes with a digibook foldout inside, plus booklet, soundtracks and art cards in the case of 1900.

The 4K’s are BD-66 each with only the film (bonus discs are separate) with Plaion doing a fantastic job with the encode. Absolutely no issues during my first spot-check.

The Legend of 1900 starts with a title card stating that the film was restored from the original negative with the sound coming from the 5.1 mag tracks. Grading was supervised by director Giuseppe Tornatore. This is a good sign as there is nothing egregious at all concerning the colors. Beautiful and lush, no tints. The restoration was done by Cinecittà, which might be a good sign for their recent 17 (?) Argento restorations.

As mentioned, there are no English subtitles anywhere on the discs, not even hidden.

Ennio, the documentary will therefore only be of help for Italian and German speakers (for English subtitles please take the superb Italian 4K, BD-100 with Atmos for the feature) and the bonus disc, Morricone Conducts Morricone is available separately.

Edit: Plaion also continues their streak of not translating on-screen titles into German. Yes!

I hope you enjoy it. I’ll start 1900 in a few minutes, the moments I checked looked beautiful.

Ennio the documentary is brilliant and moved me to tears more than once which doesn’t happen often with films. I’m not sure if you have the Italian release (which would technically be enough if you only want the feature itself as the extras aren’t subtitled) but the inclusion of the CD and live concert made me pull the trigger. I already watched the concert - absolutely phenomenal.

No, I don't have the Italian one either. I had the German release pre-ordered for 38,39 EUR (had a 20% off Thalia coupon), but eventually decided against it anyway. And I surely won't order it again for more than that. Thing is that I'm running out of space, am buying too much already and chances are high that I wouldn't even get to watching it.

I don't doubt the documentation being a good one, but at the end of the day I still prefer "real" movies and listening to actual Ennio scores, so it kinda became a victim of budget cuts if you want. One just cannot and must not own/watch everything.

I saw the film and it is more visually interesting than it seemed from the beginning. Some wonderful camera moves and colors especially during the middle part. The Morricone score is another all-timer and sounds phenomenal.

I can only reiterate that this release is a total winner especially for big fans of the film.

Btw I also wrote Plaion a nice email today giving them some praise as there are usually only voices heard when things go wrong. I want them to continue this way in the future especially when they release niche titles like these or Rider on the Rain that are somewhat unlikely to get released anywhere else.

This is one of my favorite films, will probably get it when (if?) it drops a bit in price. Right now, with shipping it's over $50...
