Default Raja Hindustani on NetFlix

So I need some expert insight about the pic quality here. I never saw the original presentation but its DNR'd here when you look at the faces within the first 5 minutes.

What do you guys think?

wow! what a coincidence!

I got email from Netflix saying RAJA HINDUSTANI is availble.

Its in 1080 HD @ 7.15 Mbps.

PQ is around 1/2 out of like YRF DDLJ BRD. Present in 2.35:1 OAR.

AQ is complete disappointment. out of . Only LPCM 2.0 Stereo @ 48 Hz. OST is 5.1 Dolby Digital.

This is really sad how Netflix is treating Mid-1990s Bollywood Blockbuster cinema.

Dont have too high hope for GUPT, RANGEELA etc etc. We may get Full HD but Audio is seriously being compromised.

You are not totally sure about that, are you?

The credit scroll of the movie makes no such claim, as there's no mention of the word "Dolby" anywhere. And, if I remember correctly, the DEi version of the movie had a mono mix. I'm sure they would have given us a 5.1 mix if the film owned one. However, there is no credible authenticity of my claim, so let me shut my point here.
Any other sources you could cite to make your point clear?

well. definitely not 100%.

Since its 1996 I am assuming. And I dont clearly remember reading Dolby Digital on original poster.

Since DDLJ (1995) and RANGEELA (1995) was 5.1 DD spectral recording.

I do recall original RAJA HINDUSTANI DEI DVD had Dolby Digital logo.

Hmm well this is the best i've ever seen of Raja Hindustani as far as PQ is concerned. There were actually quite a few bollywood releases including Chaahat, English Babu Desi Mem, Queen and Drisham .. All 1080p .. Looks like Red Chillies releasing two at a time. Might see Dil Se.. in a few weeks.

Neither of these movies were originally released in Dolby Digital. 'DDLJ' & 'Rangeela' were both originally released with 'Dolby SR', which is an analog surround sound format that had 4.0 channels (FL, FC, FR & S) matrixed into a stereo audio track.

'Raja Hindustani', however was never released with Dolby audio and had only mono sound. All DVDs by default have to have audio encoded in Dolby Digital (AC3) or DTS (rarely used).

Dolby Digital is just a codec. It doesn't necessarily mean 5.1. IIRC DEI DVDs presented mono soundtracks as 2-channel mono.

CHAAHAT just got uploaded on Netflix. Its full HD 1080 @ 6.19 Mbps looks good enough. I did a 10 mins test run.

EBDM just got uploaded on Netflix. Its full HD 1080 @ 6.19 Mbps looks good enough again. Doing a 15 min test run.

It maybe a long while before we'll see DIL SE, HEY RAM (this one not even available on YT movies or RCE purchses yet).

btw, its very clear SHEMAROO is digitally restoring all bollywood films looks like. Its logo accidentally showed up for a 10th of a second before CHAAHAT started on Netflix.

Restored or not, the only reason I can think of for anyone to watch this film is if they've been told they have only a few hours to live, and they want to make those hours seem the longest ever and crave to die immediately after

Believe it or not. I have not seen EBDM till RCE let me purchase it in HD for $5.00.

It starts off very shaky but sort of settles down into "ok" film. Its really not as bad as YLJK or even GUDDU

The relationship between Kid SRK, Kid Sonali, Sonali Kiran Kumar isnt to bad if you get over shaky first 30 mins.

It is still considerably better than unbearable GUDDU, YLJK which are just atrocious. Even the songs are considerably better here.

I'll give it a out of . An average fair.

Plus

Sonali is such an "eye candy."

I never heard of this movie until Amazon put it on sale last week for a very reasonable price. I read some reviews, and it seemed intriguing. I like some Bollywood but haven't really been exposed enough. My interest in the form peaked a couple of years ago when R-R-R won an Oscar, but it isn't available with English subs or audio. So I picked this flick up, and watched it today, not expecting much from a 3 hour romantic comedy of sorts. I expected to watch it in 1/2 hour spurts if it was at all interesting. Long story short: it's a stunner. The music and dancing had me swaying and my toe tapping for nearly the entire 3 hours. It's a real feel good film. I don't usually gravitate towards rom coms, but this is something else entirely. I can't recommend it enough. The colors are stunning, the music excellent, the performances very good. Though a bit predictable, that doesn't matter, because it's about how the predictable scenarios develop and flower. The last 30 minutes blew me away. I was alternately laughing my ass off and crying. Enough. If you get a chance to see this one, don't let the running time deter you. You'll be hooked 10 minutes in. Six stars out of six. Whatever that means.

Whoa, looks like you got bitten proper by the Bollywood bug. Raja Hindustani is a prime example of mainstream Bollywood in the 90's. if you liked that one, then you will like a lot of the big Bollywood films from that era. Maybe you should next try Dhadkan. You can also try Yash Raj Films releases like Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil to Pagal Hai and Mohabbatein.

Yes, and thanks. I've ordered 3 of the ones you recommended already. Might pick your brain for more later. Just curious, how did you like RRR (if you saw it)?

I liked RRR a good deal, although my favorite Rajamouli film is still Eega.

Btw, just saying, I'm not a great fan of the above movies, but if you liked Raja Hindustani, they are in a similar spirit of grandiose Bollywood drama.
