Default Denon 2309 setup question

This Denon, while a quality unit, is a major pain to get running for an audio neophyte. The manual is horrid.

Anyway...I have finally dialed in my 7.1 speakers. I am unable to get sound piped to them. Hoping someone can tell me what I need to do because I'm beyond frustrated : )

I have a Pioneer BD player hooked into the Receiver via HDMI cable (into the first HDMI jack)

The receiver is properly hooked to the speakers and all is well there.

The receiver is hooked to an older TV (old Toshiba CRT) via yellow video (component) cable....until my new TV arrives.

I can get video signal from the receiver as I used the internal menu to dial in my wall speakers.

I popped a DVD into the BD player and cannot get video signal to the TV. I thought maybe this was part of the copy protection scheme (HDMI cable in requires an HDMI cable out and won't work if you use a component cable out)...but I'm unsure.

I then popped an audio CD hoping to hear the music on my speakers...no joy there either.

I've tried all the settings and I'm flustered right now. Anyone have one of these and can look at my temporary setup and tell me how I can get some sound going : )

Thank you in advance!
