Overall I was happy with MS's showcase but for me this was the biggest disappointment. This was the one game I was looking forward to seeing in the show and I wasn't impressed with what I saw in terms of gameplay or aesthetics. The initial reveal trailer looked very atmospheric but this trailer looks so sterile, almost kitschy. Considering that it supposedly takes place in the Pillars of Eternity universe I was hoping for a very different vibe.

I actually thought the old trailer looked a bit generic, but totally agree the new one has a different, more colorful/less moody atmosphere. Everything looks a bit too clean, hopefully Obsidian makes it look more lived-in or brings back some of that haze from the first trailer by the time the game gets released.

New Xbox Dynamic Background based on that nice Avowed key art.

I’m still super excited for this. I feel like so many people slept on The Outer Worlds. It had a fantastic story, a creative world, fun characters, and actually let you find multiple ways to accomplish your goals. Letting you, as the player, be creative about how you solved a situation. Not a lot of games do this, these days. It’s usually all scripted events with one singular path forward.

Didn't get to the dlc but I LOVED The Outer Worlds. The composer of the main theme (Justin Bell) now works at Sony Santa Monica and worked on Ragnarok. Really nice guy to chat with on Twitter.

I love most games Obsidian have made. Pentiment was an awesome experience, even if it wasn’t so-called “next gen.” The first Outer Worlds was one of my favorite games last gen. I have faith in them to deliver an amazing game.

Delayed (per Xbox, I don’t remember a date ever being given) to Feb 18th 2025.

Yeah I don’t think they had a firm date, had just said Q4 this year.

Makes sense to delay this one. Decent amount of stuff coming to Gamepass this fall already and this doesn’t seem like a game that would fair well in the busy holiday season vs. the slower winter months.

Just my wishful thinking but Feb 18th 2025 sounds like two weeks until Nintendo’s next hardware launch.

Avowed launches on February 18, 2025. Pre-order today or play Day One with Xbox Game Pass.

Buy the Premium Edition and get up to 5 days early access, 2 Premium Skin Packs, and Access to Avowed Digital Artbook and Original Soundtrack.

Steelbook looks nice, $95 though...

Also interesting that PC Game Pass players can access the game via Battle.net, not just the Microsoft Store/Xbox App. The Play Anywhere benefit is expanding...

Quote:
In addition, players with a Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass membership will be able to play Avowed on Battle.net by linking their Xbox and Battle.net accounts. Whether you’re playing on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox app on Windows, Battle.net, Steam, cloud, or on day one with Xbox Game Pass, get ready to dive into a world where you play your way.

Reviews have been so wildly off with this one. Like, in a weird way. You can literally read or watch reviews from multiple gaming personalities/online publications and they will say the exact opposite of one another. Literally went from a review saying the combat was the absolute best part of the game and the story and characters were just okay and forgettable and your choices didn’t matter, to the next review saying the story and characters are the strongest part of the game, the choices you make are impactful but the combat is tedious and boring. One review saying it’s the best running Obsidian game they’ve ever played at launch, to the next review saying it’s the buggiest game they’ve played in years.

I’ll be checking it out on Tuesday, regardless. It’s a game I’ve really been looking forward to. Maybe all of its parts will “work” for me, and I’ll have a grand old time! Here’s to hoping!

I don't really trust reviews, especially in the last few years where someone's politics or ideology takes center stage instead of telling what is fun or not about the product under review.

One of the great things about Game Pass (and demos) is the ability to just play the game and decide for yourself, especially great when you can stream instead of installed.
