United Kingdom StudioCanal Cult Classics (Extreme Prejudice, High Crime, More)

Looks like a new sub-line with 3 releases coming in July:

High Crime

Kill Them All and Come Back Alone

Extreme Prejudice

Exciting, but that 93-minute runtime for High Crime is concerning (it should run about 103 minutes uncut, per the recent German Blu). But given SC released the cut 93-minute version in France (and submitted this version to the BBFC), it's probably no surprise.

Extras courtesy of DVDCompare:

Quote:
High Crime

- "A Criminal Conversation: Enzo G. Castellari Remembers High Crime" interview
- "The Scene of the Crime" interview with cinematographer Roberto Girometti
- "High and Dry: The Stuntwork of Massimo Vanni" interview
Quote:
Kill Them All and Come Back Alone

- Audio Commentary by filmmaker and fan Alex Cox
- "Shoot to Kill, Aim to Thrill" interview with director Enzo G. Castellari
- "Shoot-Outs in the Old Spaghetti West" filmmaker Romolo Guerrieri on a Family of Filmmaking
- "Italy's Cult Auteur of Action Cinema: A Critical Retrospective of Enzo G. Castellari" documentary
Quote:
Extreme Prejudice

- Audio Commentary by film historians C. Courtney Joyner and Henry Parke
- Isolated Score Selections featuring an audio interview with music historian John Takis
- "The Major's Agenda" interview with actor Michael Ironside
- "The War Within" interview with actor Clancy Brown
- "Capturing the Chaos" interview with director of photography Matthew F. Leonetti
- Original Trailers
- Vintage EPK
- Stills Gallery

After Arrow's Rogue Cops set I was expecting them to be the ones putting out High Crime and other Castellari films. Not complaining though, a new blu-ray line means more films being released. In for the two Castellari, but the cuts are unfortunate.

Never seen Extreme Prejudice but I've always meant to. It's directed by Walter Hill, John Milius involved in the story, it has a great cast, and it's a modern western. It would have to try really hard to be bad. So it seems like a safe blind buy.

EXTREME PREJUDICE is a no-brainer. Pretty much looks like a port of the Vestron release judging by the extras (although it doesn’t mention the Hill interview). Will definitely pick this up

Damn, didn't see this coming. Wonder if Indicator's interest in some titles and SC seeing all these cult titles doing well for other labels like Arrow, Eureka and 88 made them think 'hey, we could do this' rather than sublicense to Indicator/Network.

A bit of a shame in the case of Extreme Prejudice, which I hoped might get the Indicator treatment (but hey, perhaps they'll still do Johnny Handsome). I suppose this is no doubt action oriented, so not exclusively what Indicator are going for anyway. I wonder if we'll get Near Dark etc through this strand?

Other than adding a booklet I’m not sure what more Powerhouse could have done with EP. The extras look pretty decent to me…

Of course we wait with baited breath re the encode….

I mean, they would've got Hill involved for an interview at least...but yeah, still happy to be getting it so can't complain much (I'm sure they at least tried to get it, maybe SC turned them down since the Vestron was already a go). Let's hope SC don't screw the encode, we know what they're like sometimes...

Anyone else predict what else they might do? I'm guessing Cold Sweat is a high likelihood (another I thought Indicator might get, but looking less likely by the minute).

I want to see High Crime, but not in the cut version. If the uncut version is included, then it's a sale, but if not, I'll just have to wait for another version. I gather FilmArt in Germany have it uncut, but only with English audio and no subtitles, while I require Italian audio and English subtitles.

The price on the Vestron US BD of Extreme Prejudice is too good to ignore, so I probably won't be getting the UK BD, but I'm glad to see it being put out and hopefully, Canal has a better encode if Lionsgate's encode is knackered.

Fingers crossed for 'Peur sur la ville' ['The Night Caller'/'Fear over the City'] and 'Without Apparent Motive' both of which have come out in France on blu minus english subs.

I'm hoping for a car load of British suspense thrillers from the 1960s.

DVDCompare notes that the export version of High Crime has “various trims, including five minutes of the climax changing the fate of certain characters” - so likely only English dub as well.

Kill Them All and Come Back Alone retains the Alex Cox commentary from the Kino BD (also happening with the German BD of The Hellbenders), but adds some new extras. Though the Wild East DVD and Koch BD had a 43 minute interview with Giovanni Cianfriglia/Ken Wood (can’t remember if the interview is in English or Italian).

Odd that Extreme Prejudice doesn’t have the 57 minute interview with Hill from the French Make My Day! Blu (also released by StudioCanal), or the 39 minute one from the Optimum DVD. Though it does have the newly produced extras from the Vestron release. I think Imprint might be releasing it in Australia too.

Two of these are from the Jean-Baptiste Thoret branded Make My Day! collection. Other American and Italian titles in that series include Mandingo, Near Dark, Max mon amour, The Day of the Owl, Il maestro di Vigevano, Nickelodeon, The Moment of Truth, Honky Tonk Freeway, Cold Sweat, Vice Squad, Someone Behind the Door, Silver Bears, Miracle à l'italienne/Le Futur est Femme, One Potato Two Potato, Frances, Le Conseiller/Napoli spara!, The Black Marble, In nome della legge, Angelina, Tender Mercies

Yeah I think Walter Chaw let slip he was working on both Extreme Prejudice and Johnny Handsome for Imprint (therefore hoping the latter comes from Indicator or StudioCanal soon). And yes, you're right it's odd they don't include extras from the French BD but maybe this was an agreement with Vestron/Lionsgate to have two identical releases for the English market? Similar to Arrow apparently doing Running Out of Time 1&2 for the US with MoC covering the UK (and Arrow having done similar things before, e.g. To Live and Die in L.A.).

Peur sur la ville was originally Columbia here - it went out as supporting feature to White Line Fever with an indecipherable yellow poster image, billing it only as 'A psycho dramatic film from Columbia Pictures' and reducing the cast to the small print - so unless rights reverted that and The Burglars are in Indicator or Eureka's court. They'd make a great double disc set (especially with both cuts of The Burglars as well as the 1957 version).

Hopefully other Belmondos like Week-end a Zuydcoote/Weekend at Dunkirk may be on the cards - there's absurdly little of Bebel's work available in the UK.

There are a handful more StudioCanal titles released in France that could well come out through this line here - if they are doing just action titles, we could see things like Objective 500 Million, Counsellor at Crime, Police Python 357, Weapons of Death, and Vice Squad. Lots of 70's French crime/thriller stuff and some Italian titles too, with the odd random US/British title as well. Could be interesting! I suppose they'll figure what other labels are releasing before dropping loads of random French thrillers nobody knows much about (though an actor like Alain Delon will probably do fairly well so maybe they'll test the waters with some of his films).

On initial reading of the starter post of this thread, High Crime and Kill Them All and Come Back Alone are the two I'm interested in getting, especially the latter (the latter has had a few Blu-ray releases elsewhere, including in the States).

Don't know how (ie. what the line would be called), but still hoping Studiocanal do UK releases of Rider on the Rain, The Seduction and Superstition.

An intriguing-sounding line this.
