From CBC in Canada
Overall, those three are a pretty reasonable bunch. http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/te...ics/hddvd.html |

I am constantly fighting and having conversations with people about DUD. Now that Blu has one. I show them, and they hate sony and waiting for Downloads, or the other excuse is
"Bluray will die in 2 years" Just because technology is moving too fast I guess depending on your surroundings i guess And i am Canadian |

Ironic that almost everyone of those people mentioned price as being a significant factor in their decision.
The irony is that it was the price that actually killed HDDVD. It shut out every manufacturer in the world except Toshiba (who was subsidizing the cost heavily) from entering HDDVD. One manufacturer can not win a format war alone. |

I personnaly don't know anyone in my circle of friends that has blu-ray or HD-DVD in their home at the moment, though I know a few with HD TV. But I would see a lot of people buying discs at my local Best Buy store. My dad, however, was under the impression last December that HD-DVD was winning, I quickly showed the real stats. HD-DVD really did use a lot of FUD and misinformation that made it to uninformed media as well as users.
Still, I'm impressed how those three "pollees" are simply taking their lumps in stride. |

Again - the individual "learned" this from media FUD. Same with the fellow who talks about the Warner releases being superior on HD-DVD. Unless he had both formats at home (in which case he still would not have said this), only by reading this bit of misinformation on a HD-DVD site could he have possibly thought such a things - unless he was merely concerned with the Warner extras. Still, none of them whine. Stiff upper lip and all that ...

This is so true though:
"But what I have is an upconverting DVD player with seven free movies for $99, so it really doesn't matter. You can't go wrong for a $100." Toshiba were giving this stuff away well below cost, and it still made no difference. But the customers didn't really loose out. |

You guys noticed that 2 out of the 3 were the xbox add-ons. Hmmm...seems to me that the HD-DuD camp was saying that it was sad that the PS3 was considered one of the best players when 2 thirds (according to the article) go the add on. I only know one person who has an HD-DVD player and it was the add-on to the 360 as well LOL. Everyone else went blu or waiting for a clear winner.
As for the pricing, of course it was one of the many reason why Toshiba threw in the towel. You need to make money somewhere and you have investors to answer to as well. You can't sell products constantly at a loss (you shouldn't do that at all) it's always bad business. Reminds me of an airline here in Canada called JetsGo. They were selling seats on Sundays for 1$. Of course a year later they declared bankruptcy. ![]() |

The one thing about all this is that the only reason anybody bought hd dud was because of price. It just boils down to people looking for the cheapest way out. Their was no room for profit on the duds so why would anybody else manufacture them. Since when did the name Toshiba inspire confidence to buy a product, If any of them truely researched, they would have seen the vast number of companies that support bd and then the few that did dud. Lastly, the dud's never sold more in any week than bd, so the guy was talking out of his ass.
