Default Big Trouble in Little China (remake)

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to Star in ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Remake (Exclusive)

Quote:
20th Century Fox is excited about a new take from “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in negotiations to star in a remake of John Carpenter‘s cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” that will be written by “X-Men: First Class” scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

A representative for 20th Century Fox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The original 1986 movie starred Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall. The film only grossed $11 million at the domestic box office but it is revered as a cult classic and a cable TV staple that fans can’t turn away from when it airs.

Johnson is making a deal play Jack Burton, an All-American trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Johnson and his producing partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia pitched the remake to Fox, which controlled the rights, having released the original movie. “Big Trouble in Little China” is one of Johnson’s favorite movies, and Miller and Stentz have already closed a deal to write the script.

Johnson is coming off a $54 million opening weekend for “San Andreas,” which was also set in San Francisco. The film topped both the domestic and international box office. He’ll soon be seen on HBO’s new original series “Ballers,” which debuts later this month, and he’s also set to star in WB’s comic book movie “Shazam.” Johnson is also lending his voice to Disney’s animated movie “Moana.” He’s represented by WME and Gang, Tyre, Ramer and Brown.

Miller and Stentz wrote the screenplay for Marvel’s “Thor” as well as the upcoming “Power Rangers” movie that will be directed by Dean Israelite. They’re repped by WME and Principato-Young Entertainment.

Uh, um, I have no words.

I know J.C. gets his checks, but there would come a point where I'd be tired of seeing my filmography being remade one by one.

So I suppose that, in this one, Jack Burton actually IS the hero...

Well, the original was a bust for me, but I would be willing to give this one a go if Rock is indeed cast.

Really? I mean REALLY? WHY do we need this?
Is this like hot on the heels of the Kung Fury success or what?

I was a huge fan of The Rock as a kid. I bought his autobiography and I still have a couple of his t-shirts from the Attitude era, lol, but as a film star he doesn't half pick some projects that really don't suit his talents. This is one prime example.

I always try and think about what the studio sees in a remake and I don't even understand how they think they'll make money off of this. They have now cast Johnson in this which will help, but seriously was the first even a box office success?

This has quick cash grab written all over it, and I don't see the film's "cult" followers as getting really excited over a remake. It's very much of the era it was created and a lot will be lost in translation. Not to mention there's quite a bit that happens in there that would be...difficult to see being made in a large motion picture today.

I'm hopeful, as always, but this doesn't seem right.

The original was great, no need for a remake.

I have a feeling it could end up like the Total Recall remake. The fans of the original will come out and say, "this looks like they just kept the title and the basic premise," and the general audience won't give a crap. Could very well be a situation where it's being made because they have a big money-making movie star attached and they already have the groundwork for a plot.

Obviously it would be premature to say if the movie will be good or bad; we have nothing to go off of. I like Dwayne Johnson, so if it looks good I'll see it. But how much the remake resembles the original Big Trouble in Little China... that remains to be seen. Everyone forgot the Total Recall remake.

Yes!

Love Johnson, and I am already confident this will be better than the original. It's not a bad flick, but hardly the classic people think it is.

With all these sequels of long dormant franchsies and reboots of films that don't really need them, it sounds like there is Big Trouble in...Hollywood.

Eh?

This is truer than true.

Hollywood needs to respect the classics and get some new ideas.

If the original is really one of Johnson's favorite movies, you could always hold out hope he fights to retain as much of the original as possible. He'll be a producer, so he'll get his say.

I hope that - putting the original aside - it ends up being a cool movie. Action movies with the Rock tend to be cool. At the very least, Johnson will make it watchable. He's a true movie star. He's one of those handful of actors for me where, if he's in it, I'll at least give the movie a shot.*

*In most cases. I never bothered with that Tooth Fairy one.
