Australia Wake in Fright 4K UHD (1971) - Umbrella Entertainment

Quote:
ALL THE LITTLE DEVILS ARE PROUD OF HELL.

Proudly presenting Umbrella's newly restored WAKE IN FRIGHT in glorious 4K Dolby Vision with authoring by Fidelity in Motion.

Raw and uncompromising in its depiction of Australian masculinity and country culture, Ted Kotcheff's WAKE IN FRIGHT is a unique horror film - equal parts an ode to the outback and a nightmarish descent.

Featuring iconic performances from an ensemble that includes Chips Rafferty, Jack Thompson and Donald Pleasance, experience the horrifying and captivating WAKE IN FRIGHT, one of Australia’s most legendary and valuable contribution to film.

Bored school teacher John Grant (Gary Bond) stops overnight in Bundanyabba, a frontier mining town, on his way to Sydney for Christmas. After a bad gambling bet, Grant is swept up in the vortex of a group of hard-drinking, hard-living, crude, vicious men who threaten to make him just as crazy, drunk, and violent.

I was going to get the Yabba edition since it has free shipping to the US, but the webshop forces me to pay in USD and is claiming that $200 AUD is $150 USD, when Google is telling me the current rate is more like $127 USD.

Can't you change the currency to A$? It lets me do it. Then use PayPal and make sure PayPal is set to local currency only (A$). I always do that with a currecy fee free card too. That bypasses merchant fees from Umbrella's provider and rip-off PayPal.

That's a damn fine release.

I was just thinking about the film after watching:

Doesn't look like it. I can change the Umbrella site to AUD, but as soon as the checkout sees that it's going to a US delivery address, it changes currencies from AUD to USD and adjusts the total from $200 AUD to $150 USD. There doesn't seem to be a way to bypass the checkout, either. PayPal is a payment option from the checkout but continues the transaction for $150 USD without offering any other currency options.

Unless I'm blind and not seeing a way to bypass the checkout and go only to PayPal.

Just to update this, there does not appear to be any way to pay in AUD for a delivery to the USA. I have no idea why the shop claims that $200 AUD is $150 USD, because today, for example, Google says $200 AUD is actually $124.13 USD, so why the checkout is converting with what ends up being about a 20% markup, I don't know.

I'm getting irritated with so many Shop Pay stores forcing payment in the buyer's local currency. There should always be a choice of either seller or buyer currency.

I would not be surprised if Umbrella has the US rights and the same release comes out here through their deal with Vinegar Syndrome.

From my understanding, the original BD was an OCN scan.

Huh, I didn't know that. I always thought this was one of those films where there were rumors of too much damage to the OCN or not having it or something. I wonder why it's struggled to have a good release then. Just shit restorations and encodes?

The previous restoration had a substantial amount of DNR applied to it and all of the Blu-rays were pretty rough looking, even though everything was director approved. Umbrella doesn;t seem to have involved the filmmakers in the actual grading this time or applied any DNR. The trailer looks different in every way from the Eureka Blu-ray I have, mainly the lovely grain that's present in it but also from shot to shot the color grade looks much more dialed-in -

I'm gonna blind buy this. I reached out to Umbrella to cancel my order of The Fall, so that I can combine it with this and save on shipping. I know sometimes they take a while to respond, so I figured I'd ask.

Anyone ever cancel with them? They give a hard time or refund pretty quickly?

Yes, I've cancelled with Umbrella. They've refunded within 48 hours. They were totally cool with it, too.

One of my favourite films, I Iike the scene when John declines the bloke for a drink:

Van Driver: Come and have a drink, mate?
John Grant: No thanks.
Van Driver: Come on, have a drink!
John Grant: No, I'm just not at the moment.
Van Driver: It'll only take a minute. Come on, come and have a drink!
John Grant: Look mate, I've given up drinking for a while.
Van Driver: What's wrong with you, you bastard? Why don't you come and drink with me? I've just brought you fifty miles in the heat and dust, and you won't drink with me! What's wrong with you!?
John Grant: What's the matter with you people? Sponge on you, you, burn your house down, murder your wife, rape your child, that's all right! Not have a drink with you, not have a... flaming bloody drink with you, that's a criminal offence, that's the... end of the bloody world!
Van Driver: Yer mad, ya bastard!

I didn't understand this film the first time I watched it on DVD but maybe in hindsight, and via this new restoration in a superior format, I'll gain a new appreciation. I'll order a copy closer to street date, though. I'm moving away from buying stuff months in advance. There's no real point to that.
