blu-rays will play on a 4:3 crt 480p tv
my parents have a Akai 27" 720p tv and it made a HUGE difference and it made a big difference on my Samsung CRT 26" 720p

I also own a 1080i CRT; depending on your available connections, BDs will play just fine for you.
