Australia Katsuhiro Otomo's Steamboy Coming from Umbrella May 1, 2019

Umbrella is releasing this soon. It's up for pre-order on Amazon AU.

There has only been one English-friendly Blu-ray release to date: the Manga UK Blu-ray.

Only problem is, it's region B-locked. There's still no word on whether we'll ever see it Stateside or not. None of the other releases, despite being region-A, have been English-friendly, which is to say, no English dub and no English subs. So... what are the chances Umbrella's release will be region free and English-friendly like their release of the Cowboy Bebop movie?

Sony owns it stateside (as Destination Film/TriStar had distributed it theatrically). If a US BD release were to materialize it'd probably be through ether Sony themselves, Mill Creek in a Metropolis style steelbook, or Funimation (which Sony owns and had recently put out Cowboy Bebob: The Movie also under licence from Sony and Sunrise).

I would be happy if Sony took back all their anime and live action foreign stuff from Mill Creek and released it under the Funimation label. There's stuff that we haven't seen and didn't know existed in that pile of titles.

I hope Dynit does an Italian release with English subs (and maybe dub), as they already did that with one Sony owned title- the Bebop movie.

If you have a BD drive on a computer and don't mind ripping it with MakeMKV, it's easy enough to avoid region encoding. Makes watching it maybe a little annoying but it is serviceable since most BD players offer USB playback.

I live in the UK and still haven't upgraded from my DVD edition; I am a bad anime fan!

So, has anyone laid hands on the disc who can tell us its region coding? Rewind/DVDCompare has nothing.

Thanks for letting us know. I'll have to see about importing a copy when I get some spending money.

I'm not surprised that the master used for the DVD was recycled for the Blu-Ray. If I could get it for cheap, I'd buy it, but otherwise passing on it.
