Default Blu-ray and Sony Joint Venture?

Hey everybody, I am doing research for a project and I would like to know if there is some sort of official Joint Venture between Blu-ray and Sony? I figured there was because of the Playstation 3 and the fact that Blu-ray has won over HD-DVD partly because someone was smart enough to pair them together before the release of the PS3.

Can anybody confirm some kind of joint venture between Sony and Blu-ray? And if so, please provide any kind of link!

Thanks!

Sony was one of the Chief developers of Blu-ray. It's not a "joint venture," Blu-ray is Sony's (and a few others) venture.

Sony was the chief manufacturer involved with developing Blu-ray. They started two projects called UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue, a format of RW discs which would later become Blu-ray Disc. Pioneer was the other major contributor to this (specifically on DVR Blue). If you look at any of Pioneer's Blu-ray products on their website, the always credit towards the bottom of the page by saying "Blu-ray Disc is a trademark of Sony Corporation."

BDA (blu-ray disc association): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Association

Blu-ray disc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc

Wikipedia's info isn't always totally accurate but it should at least give you a good idea of the format and the those behind it.

I just saw that, but isn't that mistake? On PS3 games and manuals, it says "Blu-ray disc is a trademark." not of Sony, because it really isn't, but simply a trademark. In fact, Dragon's Lair says on it: "trademark of the Blu-ray disc Association" which I believe to be the correct statement.

Panasonic actually holds more blu-ray patents than Sony, and the BDA is chaired by a VP of Panasonic.
