could be good news if they start releasing stuff like Don and other 70's / 80's classics

They've named their label after a Mani Kaul short so I wouldn't expect too much genre stuff from them.

The Variety article mentions "cult classics" which could include genre films.

I wonder if they'll be releasing any films restored by the Film Heritage Foundation. Few of those restorations have gotten home video releases.

Oh great news! I followed Omar Ahmed on Twitter last year as he was discussing the idea of setting up a label focusing on South Asian cinema, so I'm glad to see he has succeeded! Will keep an eye on this and probably end up backing the kickstarter (or at least buying the first release(s)). Glad to see another UK label specialising in neglected corners of global cinema.

I haven't backed anything in Kickstarter in a long time. Used to back some board games. Is there a good way to keep an eye on any Blu-Ray/UHD projects (for Region B + English friendly) in particular?

I haven't seen much Indian cinema I admit, I've seen Zinda (Indian version of Oldboy) and an Indian version of Reservoir Dogs, I remember I rented a tape once that looked like it was recorded from TV (and not subtitled)

I've not scene much Indian cinema although I recall having seen the Apu trilogy, a film I can't remember the name of at the London Film Festival, pre-pandemic, & 2-3 of the Ramsay brothers horror films. I also recall seeing an Indian film, think it was called Lagaan, about Cricket which was spread across 2 discs & the problem was that the scene selection on the 2nd disc spoilt the film by having the scoreboard in the pic for a scene so you know who wins the important match.

The Kickstarter is up and running, and they're hoping to hit £35,000 by July 31st.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ay-and-extras/

£35 to back their first Blu-ray (w/ slipcover), or £70 if you want the A3 poster as well. Worth noting the encoding will be FiM and the artwork is by Aleksander Walijewski.

Also a great interview with the founders has just appeared:

Really hope they're able to hit their goal!! We need more South Asian cinema out there!

And this kickstarter is not JUST for their first release but also to help setup the label as a whole. The higher prices are just for this first release to help generate money. So yes it's a lot of money, but it's also going to be doing a lot of work!

FWIW, I've seen this film twice at the cinema and once on DVD, and it's a Mofo Mind Trip. Think a more energetic kind of Jodorowsky movie.

Very interesting - both the initial film and the label itself. I agree with them that Indian cinema has been a real blind spot in the Blu-ray/4K era, and I'd love to see them fill that niche.

I wouldn't mind seeing India's first crowdfunded (by half a million farmers donating ₹2 each) Manthan (1976) get a UK release as I had to miss it at last year's London Film Festival because it clashed with another film.

I've added to the kickstarter total but it's still far off the target.
