New edition, details are scarce but it appears to be from Studio "Research" out of Spain? Its cover looks near-identical to a previous DVD edition. It also shows it's Region-Free.

I ordered this a couple of weeks ago when it started returning from my saved eBay search- I've been previously chasing the rare German Blu-Ray without success, since the movie is not available to stream here in Australia.

Tracking shows it's still in transit, will update when it arrives!

I'd also be keen to hear comparisons with the German edition, since User Reviews suggested that might have used the DVD Master for the transfer.

This is definitely a bootleg, but if it's a pressed disc that clones the German edition then no harm done I suppose!

This has more Dubs & Subtitles listed than the German edition, and from that edition's listing here, it would appear that the sound in the German edition is superior- with the original English & German Dub in DTS-HD 5.1, rather than 2.0 on this new edition.

Mine arrived today & I've submitted a listing for it, photos to follow. Hope to get a chance to watch it tomorrow & compare it to the rip of the German edition I have.

Another detail- the cover is reversible & the other side is in Italian, but otherwise identical.

Also waiting on an external Blu Ray drive I've ordered to screenshot & scan the disc for its full specs.

Did a viewing of this BR & comparison with Amazon HD Stream- I was mistaken, I did not have a rip of the German Blu-Ray after all.

It played in my unmodified Region B Sony UBP-X700, PS5 Pro & Xbox Series X OK.

The superiority of picture sharpness & sound of the HD Stream was immediately apparent- the Spanish BR was softer, more pixelated & had ringing around the white text in the opening credits... as has been suggested about the German edition, it could have been transferred from the DVD.

That said, I still prefer it to the stream which had both a noisier picture- with an artificial looking film grain effect in close-ups being very distracting- and a static hiss through the sound, with uncomfortable treble & mids.

In contrast, I felt the Lo-Fi aesthetic of this Spanish BR actually suits the period & tone of the movie better. I might seek a DVD edition for further comparison.

So in short, it appears there is still no definitive HD version of the film available, and only the comparative availablity of this Blu-Ray & maybe its additional language Dubs & Subs to recommend it.

Appreciate the info, there’s literally 0 info online on this Spanish Blu-ray, and if it’s just a port from the dvd what’s the point? Was there enhancements made? I’m so confused, I’m on the fence on whether I should wait for a possible new transfer in the future or bite the bullet and get the Spanish Blu-ray?

I can only refer you to my conclusion in the same post:

These screenshots I captured with my Laptop with a 15" 1080p display look actually decent & much better than what I see on my 4K OLED TVs...?

This led me to re-test the disc with again with alternative players in each, but they still all show the same ringing around the white intro text & other artifacts I reported earlier- even connecting the Laptop with a HDMI & using the same player I captured the screenshots with, when I suspected it may be upscaling.

If these artifacts are being introduced by the upscaling of the TV or my consoles or dedicated player, I've never observed this playing any other disc, so I'm guessing that the smaller screen size & resolution of the laptop might be concealing them?

I'd be interested to hear other's observations with their set-ups to compare!

I've seen a copy of the German Blu Ray, and it has ringing around the white title text, and in general just looks to me like it was based on SD video. The Amazon Prime version was much more satisfying.

I was lucky enough to get a brand new copy of the German Blu-Ray release on eBay recently. Because I love this movie I have the Official German version, this newer Spanish version, the original DVD from when it was first released and the bootleg that contains the Theatrical and Extended Cuts, where one is very clearly just a copy of the Amazon stream.

After looking at them all side-by-side, the Amazon copy is clearly the best and produced from a different master. The official German release and the newest version are the same transfers that look slightly better than the DVD with noticeable halo artifacting and sometimes ghosting. The Amazon stream is much more "natural" looking and doesn't appear sharpened or upscaled.

This really makes me want to get the bootleg. I have the German release, but the PQ definitely looks like an ancient master and the audio is lossy DTS High Resolution while the other has a fully lossless DTS MA track.

The quantity of extras is nice, but it's not very English friendly when it comes to subtitles or its menus. It's also the extended version with the scene of Max talking with Fritz about Plato. I never knew the US DVD was missing it until I imported the German disc. It's a short movie as is, so I wonder why it was cut. Maybe because it ended with a joke?

It would've been nice if it had come out for the Eggers remake or this year for its 25th anniversary.

The bootleg is surprisingly good quality with great packaging. Definitely on par with the official German release. Has menus and everything.

Its cover looks near-identical to a previous DVD edition. It also shows it's Region-Free. I ordered this a couple of weeks ago when it started returning from my saved eBay search- I've been previously chasing the rare German Blu-Ray without success, since the movie is not available to stream here in Australia. Tracking shows it's still in transit, will update when it arrives! It played in my unmodified Region B Sony UBP-X700, PS5 Pro & Xbox Series X OK. The superiority of picture sharpness & sound of the HD Stream was immediately apparent- the Spanish BR was softer, more pixelated & had ringing around the white text in the opening credits... as has been suggested about the German edition, it could have been transferred from the DVD. That said, I still prefer it to the stream which had both a noisier picture- with an artificial looking film grain effect in close-ups being very distracting- and a static hiss through the sound, with uncomfortable treble & mids. In contrast, I felt the Lo-Fi aesthetic of this Spanish BR actually suits the period & tone of the movie better. I might seek a DVD edition for further comparison. So in short, it appears there is still no definitive HD version of the film available, and only the comparative availablity of this Blu-Ray & maybe its additional language Dubs & Subs to recommend it.
