Glen Powell in Early Talks to Star in J.J. Abrams’ Next Film

The actor is in early talks to star in the next film from director J.J. Abrams, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. No deal is yet in place, and plot details are currently under wraps, although the project does not involve time-travel, putting to rest recent rumors about Abrams’ potential plans.

I think it's really funny how far J.J. Abrams got as a director despite only making stuff that piggybacks on nostalgia and brand. I guess he's exactly the kind of guy studios love: low risk, high reward.
Morbidly curious what he can do without a pre-existing fanbase showing up.

Commercially, he's never ever missed. MAYBE with MI : 3, which was the lowest-grossing movie of the series, but even then the perception was that it was an improvement over the misfiring MI : 2.

He does have distinctive strengths as a director, such as a consistency of tone and pacing. And his casting instincts are usually bang on too.

Is he Spielberg? Nah. Is he Cameron? Nah. Is he even Christopher Mcquarrie? Nah. But he also isn't Rawson Marshall Thurber, Colin Trevorrow or Roland Emmerich either. It could be a lot worse than JJ Abrams, and I look forward to see what he can come.up with next.

I haven't been impressed with anything JJ's done in a long time. Hopefully he doesn't drag Powell down with his mediocrity.

I also don't believe this will be an original story. It's JJ Abrams. If he can't officially remake something then he'll heavily "homage" it.

I’m sure they’re trying to lump in Super 8 with “nostalgia and brand” to suit their narrative, as if nostalgia for the late 70s is some guaranteed cash grab or that people wanted to see it because of Spielberg’s “brand” since he was a producer. But in actuality, moviegoers were interested in Super 8 because of Bad Robot’s patented marketing and for J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot being a hot commodity at the time. And it should be noted that Super 8 helped pave the way for Stranger Things, which was a significant influence on the Duffer Brothers.

Ya, the star of Anyone But You and Twisters is at risk of being “dragged down” by starring in a film by J.J. Abrams. One of the most successful directors and producers of contemporary Hollywood who has launched several acting careers.

TheBunk taking silly comments too seriously. Shocked. "Tough guy"

We knew what you were attempting to do with the critical repellent from the hop. Unfortunately the majority of us know Abrams is all asthetics and surface level stuff and not an execution guy.

Wasn't Trevorrow's Episode IX treatment universally accepted as being better than the one we got?

You can't prove intangible statements like 'universally accepted', nor should you base your opinions on a leaked copy of a work in progress that was never intended for public consumption.

What's not intangible, though, is the Colin Trevorrow filmography that we already have. So if you've sat through The Book Of Henry and Jurassic World Dominion and then want to lament that Trevorrow didn't direct Episode 9, then that's entirely your prerogative.

Well, Abrams is about as generic as you can get as far as directors go, and Glen Powell for actors, so...

I’ve been anticipating the next JJ joint for a while, but Boretega is a massive hype killer for me. Hope this casting falls through.
