Has anybody seen this movie? I saw the trailer for it and Nick Offerman is definitely playing against type. He's a Bad Ass in this. It looks pretty good.
I guess it wasn't in theaters for very long. |

This hasn't had much attention but I watched it earlier this week and thought it was excellent. I'd be surprised if it doesn't end up being in my Top 10 for the year and by rights it should get some attention come Awards time.
It's an elegant, deceptively simple film. It's not exactly a thriller but it has a neo-Noir vibe. Tonally, the closest films would be the likes of BADLANDS or NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. Offerman is brilliant as a Father who has a very specific set of principles about his standing as a free man - a "sovereign" - in society and is seeking to instill those principles in his son (a great performance by Jacob Tremblay), whatever the consequences might be. Dennis Quaid plays a senior Law Enforcement Officer who has his own specific set of principles when it comes to Fatherhood and the film charts an inevitable collision between these warring yet equally inflexible philosophies. It would be lazy to call Offerman's character a Conspiracy theorist but he is certainly Conspiracy-adjacent. Yes, this is a "topical" film in that respect and holds a mirror to the moment we're in as a world, and to America in particular. The greatness of the film is that it never for a moment feels preachy, never judging the characters, all of whom are trying to do the right thing, however misguided. SOVEREIGN is deadly serious and seriously heart-breaking but does so with a great lightness of touch. Above even the topicality, this is very much a film about Men and Fatherhood, but here it's no cheap attempt to pretend a deeper meaning, it is literally the well-spring of its narrative. In this light, the film's coda is both gutting and poignantly optimistic, even in its darkness. If all that sounds a bit dry, don't worry. SOVEREIGN is lean, intelligent and gripping, every scene pushing the story forward and ultimately delivering on the almost unbearable tension it earns throughout its short-running time. Give this one a try, folks, if you get the chance. This is a minor classic and one of the best films of 2025. |
